RE: Big Ten to play 2018 tourney in Madison Square Garden
The Big Ten should hold their tourney in Chicago, the Pac should hold it in either LA or San Fran, the SEC should hold it in either 'Nola or Atlanta, the Big XII should hold it in Dallas, the BIG EAST should hold it in NYC, and the ACC should rotate between NYC and pick a place in NC.

The BIG TEN holding it a week early in NYC is stupid.

It might make sense if there was a Big Ten hoops team that NYC cared about. They're screwing up their regular season, and potentially damaging their teams' prep for the tourney, for what amounts to a one shot NY publicity hail mary. Reeks of desperation.

What a joke. Have fun playing your conference championship game the same weekend as the OVC, Big South, and A-Sun!

watch partnerships with Big east
First, being at the garden is not all that, it looks like big 10 desperate if they select to host the conference tourney a week earlier.

remember, big east and big ten are partners with FOX sports. I expect them to make some switches in 2020 era, where Big east gives up slots for MSG for slots at Chicago. FOX gets their total properties in the city.

ACC being strategic with Barclays' getting there two years in a row, at selection weekend.

MSG is a ton of fun if fans show up. Who is going to go to a Big Ten tourney in NYC? It will be a spattering of Michigan and Maryland fans and a MSU fan here and there. After that it will be a weak and uninspired showing from everyone else. RU doesn't have fans, and neither does PSU, NW, and Nebraska. Given that RU, PSU, and UMD are the only eastern schools in the conference, and UMD is the only one with fans, this tourney pretty much hinges on how well UMD travels to NYC and how national Michigan's fan base is. This is a bad move.

This deal makes me think the Big Ten believes something will happen by 2016 or 2017 that will nullify the week early part of the deal.

Cheers,
Neil

There almost has to be something more to this because playing 'lead in' to the Big East tourney during actual Big Boy week is passing strange and really unacceptable for one of the Top hoops conferences...

If the Big Ten does this a week early its a boneheaded move. If this is misreported and they're switching with the Big East for the year then its a good move. Michigan, Maryland, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State will bring fans. Rutgers and Penn State despite the apathetic and small basketball fanbases respectively will send some people. It won't be the old Big East tourney in energy but nothing ever will be.

And isn't the ACC championship scheduled for Barclays in 2017 and 2018?

2018 could be a very interesting March. 03-wink

The B1G a week earlier and the ACC at exactly the same time as the Big East ... Not good for the Big East. They'll be completely overshadowed. They should have accepted the ACC's buyout offer.

RE: Big Ten to play 2018 tourney in Madison Square Garden
I don't think there will be any change in date. The Big Ten wouldn't announce something like unless it really was the plan. A big part of the Big East's identity is in the Madison Square Garden Tournament and they won't abandon that. Similarly, Madison Square Garden won't abandon the Big East unless someone else is willing to take the spot every year.

Not a fan of the move, but that's because I don't like the eastward focus. Accepting the eastward orientation of part of the conference though, I'll grudgingly accept this as probably a smart move.

All that said, if NCAA rules allow, I want to see regular season Big Ten games after the tournament. Unlike in the ACC, the regular season champ has always been considered the "Big Ten Champion" and it's the prize I always hope Ohio State gets (Big Ten Tournament being far less important). If there are a few games after the tournament, a couple would likely still have championship implications.

The Big Ten could always link up with another conference who has its tournament early like the A10 or OVC, and have a game or two after the tournament, especially since the B1G has its own TV network.

I'd add IU and OSU fans to those who may travel. It's the early week that is the truly bad part of this move, not having the tourney there itself.

RE: Big Ten to play 2018 tourney in Madison Square Garden
OSU will travel some and probably has a larger percent of alumni in New York vs. Chicago than most Big Ten schools, but most people I've talked to who have gone before (a fairly limited number admittedly) vastly preferred Indianapolis to Chicago for it suggesting to me New York probably isn't going to be a huge destination in and of itself (people will go, but not anymore than they'd have gone to Chicago). Also, our basketball fanbase, while big, is not nearly as passionate as the football one. If we are good, people will show up. If not, the Buckeye crowds will be decent, but not overwhelming. Either way, most will be fine watching from the living room (myself included).

All that said, you don't really need a super high turnout and most the schools will send at least a respectful number. There are 14 teams going and basketball arenas are smaller than football stadiums. I think most the games will be fine with some light crowds for the earlier games.
