RE: SportsWatch predicts Georgia Southern to win the Sun Belt in Football!
The SoCon was a one bid league this year and that whooshing sound you hear is the power vacuum that App and GS left when they left.
GS was gutted by injuries in 2013. About a third of their scholarship players missed multiple games. You hate to blame losses on injuries because it sounds like an excuse/cop out but in retrospect it is the truth. Sometimes blessings come from injuries, like McKinnon getting hurt and Ellison gaining the seasoning that led to the Florida win and this year's SunBelt title.
IMO the amount of players hurt in 2013 and therefore shelved led just about all of us, except those closest to the program, to underestimate the talent level in the program.
One other thing, and I hope y'all don't take this the wrong way, but the 2014 version of GS isn't close to being the best team they've ever fielded. Talent and production wise this group is similar to the 2004 version, but the 1986, 1989, 1999, and 2002 teams in particular were stronger IMO. An argument would be made for the 1990, 1998, 2012 teams too.
I've watched GS football since day one so I think I have a historical reference, but that is just my opinion and I could be wrong.

And I picked it correctly at 9-3. I knew what GS could do. the fact that they were able to do it speaks volumes about the program. As far as "we didn't play the two best teams in the conference", true we didn't play ULL, but we did spank App (albeit at the beginning of the season), and USA. None of this means anything but ULL won a squeaker at Gstate and lost to App. And for the record, I also don't consider a 3 loss stAte team to be one of the best teams in the conference, middle of the pack, maybe.

I wish we had t-shirt fans in the area like UGA does.
We'd have 35k (at least) in attendance if we did.

Admittedly there may be more talent in the Sun Belt but the top 4 SoCon teams every year would be in the top half of the sun belt every year. We went undefeated and won the conference because we played pretty well and our guys gave a lot of effort, but we also won because it was easy. Don't believe it? Look up our margin of victory vs conference opponents in the Sun Belt and vs the SoCOn. Look up Apps too. Youd be surprised. The tired argument that this is "big boy" football just isn't valid. We knew we could compete and win and a few of you were smart enough to acknowledge it, but most of you tried desperately to "put us in our place". Well that didn't work out for you and now you've taken to insulting or fans calling us petulant children among other things. We're not children anymore now are we? You can call us daddy now.

This was the worst Sun Belt slate by a champion in nearly a decade. Your comparisons to the SOCON would not hold water from about 2008-2013. There was a precipitous drop off this year.

That comparison is inappropriate in ANY year. And if they truly feel that way, they're certainly free to go back where they came from . . . ..

The Sun Belt from 2001-2005 and in 2014 was pretty terrible. I don'tknow about the top 4 in the SOCON, but two barely removed SOCON programs fared pretty well this year.

IF they were still in the Socon and wanted to slam the Belt, that's one thing . . But to be in the Belt, and intimate that the competition here Is a step down from the Socon is not cool..... Would be like a new member of CUSA dissing the rest of y'all . .
Pretty sure you wouldn't care for it either . . . . Together we . . . . (What?)
