Sadly a loss to Virginia next week might make the situation even more difficult. If the Hokies were bowl eligible then a bowl effort and victory would be a kind of high note upon which he could retire with dignity. If they lose to Virginia and fail to make a bowl then the only hope he has to retire with the kind of finish he might like would be to return and redeem himself next season. At this point I would have little confidence that next season would be any different than this one. In fact with Pitt and Boston College showing improvement and Cutcliffe doing a fine job at Duke, and with an improving Miami, the prospects for a break even year would be bleak. And while they may not play all of those schools the point is when the bottom is strengthening and the other programs are either good are static, then the likelihood of success against conference opponents diminishes. They play Ohio State, Purdue, Furman and East Carolina out of conference. I don't think the beat the Buckeyes again next year. If they split the Purdue & East Carolina games and beat Furman then they need to win 4 conference games to go 6 -6. It won't be easy with a coach that recruits no longer believe will be there for their entire 4 years.

They still don't have a single recruit in the ESPN300 for the class of 2015.

Frank has been great for VT, and you should keep him until he is ready to step down.

People are pissed because VT is irrelevant in every sport, including football, and I can hear the gnashing of a tooth or two emanating from Blacksburg from 200 miles away.

How many years on Beamer's contract?

Well, I was very generous.

I said after the Miami loss the sun has set on the Beamer era. Nobody agreed on the VT side.

Beemer has not been the same since his wife was injured several years ago. Unfortunately I agree with Ken D., on what's coming down the pipe with the overscheduling VT has done out of conference.

VT is doing exactly what Cuse went through with Pasqualoni. Now all they have to do it hire Greg Robinson and I'll forgive VT for paying Michael Vick's HS coach off.

VT needs to show Beamer the door.

Beamer should have been overruled by someone over hiring Scott Loeffler. Terrible hire, maybe worse than Mike O'Cain, if that's possible. It's sad, but it's time.

He is the type of guy you have to respectfully say thank you to but maybe it is time... Reminds me of when Tom Jurich offered Denny Crum the University PR job to get him to step down when he could get Rick Pitino... Beamer is a legend and a great coach, he still has some in the tank but it is better to leave with some in the tank then to become a shadow of his former glory.

Pat Dye transferred quite well into the role of Coach emeritus where he actually carries out many of the social functions that head coaches once had to take out personal time to handle. So Dye became a spokesperson for the university and took some heat off of the other coaches in the process. Beamer could easily transition into such a position and would be wonderful at doing such.

Sounds good... but who would VT get to replace him?

Jim McElwain or Rich Rod. Pickings are pretty slim right now.

Promote Bud Foster. He has been loyal and he has earned it.

Bud's personality will doom him and the Virginia Tech program in much the same way that Carl Torbush's did to Carolina after Mack Brown left for Texas

either of those would be great pickups. rich rod especially would be great for vt. closer to home than Arizona. mcelwain might land the florida job.

RE: Is it time for Frank Beamer to step down?
When I first posed this question almost 7 months ago, I think I already believed that it was not just time, but past time, for Beamer to to step into his emeritus role. Had he done so in May, VT could have named Bud Foster as interim head coach, giving him a chance to earn the position by a combination of on field performance in the 2014 season plus signing more top players for the 2015 class. Granted, it's a tall order for an interim to put together a good recruiting class. If he pulls it off, he has shown he has what it takes to right the ship. If he can't, the AD has cover to go in a different direction in 2015 without being seen as disloyal to a guy who gave a lot to the program for many years.

Personally, I don't think he could have pulled it off, and I don't think this year's team would have been better than it has proven to be either. I think Foster's an excellent DC who should stay at that level, either at VT or somewhere else. I believe that by not acting before this, Beamer has made the transition to a successor harder than it had to be. He earned the right to do that, but I wish he hadn't.
