What to do in New Orleans for the weekend (Non-Bourbon St)
Figured I would give some of you guys a little guide on what to do while you are gonna be here in the N.O. for the Tulane game

Thurs
Restaurant - Jacques Imo's, my favorite restaurant in New Orleans. It's small, and very popular. It get's very crowded so I would recommend doing this one early. Its in Carrolton, not to far from Tulane.
Jacques Imo's

Live Music
  1. Irving Mayfield and the N.O. Jazz Orchestra tribute to Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, and Queen - 8pm - House of Blues 225 Decatur St
  2. Rue Fiya (Soul Music) 10pm - The Maison 508 Frenchman
  3. Bounce XLIII feat. Big Freedia (Rap/Bounce) - The Republic 828 S Peters

Fri
Restaurant - Dooky Chase - One of the legends of N.O. cooking. It's in the Treme, and the food is awesome. Dooky Chase

Live Music
  1. Tank and the Bangas (Funk, Soul, Spoken Word), might be my favorite band in New Orleans, they are a part of the This is NOLA show. If you register, you can get free tickets. 8pm Joy Theater, Canal St http://www.thisisnola.org/
  2. Big Pearl & Chief Doucette CD release (N.O. Mardi Gras Indians) 10pm Bambula's 514 Frenchman
  3. Ike Stubblefield, Big Sam, June Yamagishi, Jamal Watson (Funk) June Yamagishi formerly of Papa Grows Funk, one of my favorite guitarist, it will be a great show 11pm Blue Nile 532 Frenchman

Sat
Commander's Palace- This is THE restaurant of New Orleans. It is pricey, but well worth it. Make reservations or you might not be able to get in. Commander's Palace

Live Music
  1. John Boutte' This man, has one of the smoothest voices, I know. Great Jazz vocalist. 8pm D.B.A. 618 Frenchman St
  2. Art Neville ft The Treme Brass Band 10pm Tipatina's 501 Napoleon St
  3. Hustle with DJ Soul Sister- This is a funk house party. Great place to dance to some great classic funk records. Most of the crowd is 20's and 30's year olds 11pm Hi Ho Lounge 2239 St Claude

Sunday, well since you are going home (maybe), I will just recommend brunch spots

Don't pass on Tipitina's. Art Neville and the Treme guys are fabulous. I wish I could go but am in Baton Rouge Friday for an LSU sorority at Boudreau's and then back to Memphis for Silky's.

Hey, SoutherBoi,

I'm just down the road from you and get to New Orleans often. The music tips are right on. Not sure about the Court of Two Sisters recommendation but I'm right with you on Jacque Imo's, Commander's Palace, and Dooky Chase's (open only for lunch). Tons of great restaurants, so I wouldn't know where to begin, but I'll try anyway: Cochon, Cochon Butcher, Parkway Tavern (for po boys), Liuzza's by the Tracks, Bayona, Domenica, Boucherie --just look them up on the internet . . . (oh, my, some kinda good!)

Hey guys, how do these places compare to Drago's? I've been there several times and love the charbroiled oysters in the lemon butter garlic sauce!

Hermes Bar at Antoines is excellent and less expensive than may dives.

IMO they are just as good, or better than Drago's, but I aint the biggest oyster fan, so I don't think I can give the best opinion

Man, it just all depends on what you're lookin' for. Those oysters at Dragos are fantastic--and if that's what you're after, there's not another place I've come across that serves oysters exactly like they do. The places I listed all have VERY different menus.

What's the best place for Oyster Po Boys?

Locals swear by those served on Locals swear by those served on Mondays and Wednesdays by Parkway Bakery and Tavern (http://www.parkwaypoorboys.com/) but I can't seem to make it to N.O. on those days. A great local spot for oyster po boys that I really like is Parasol's (http://www.parasolsbarandrestaurant.com/) off of Magazine Street in the Garden District. They also serve killer onion rings and a great firecracker shrimp po boy (fried shrimp doused in hot sauce). There are many great dives serving po boys, though.

Salvo's on the Westbank is great for lunch. I prefer The Acme Oyster House over Dragos. BThe WW2 museum and the aquarium are a great way to spend an afternoon.
