Quote:Thanks for sharing this open letter to Dr. Watts and signed by former football players. Currently there is a study of many departments at UAB including Athletics. I know working with the Board of Trustees, the Administration at UAB, the City of Birmingham, Jefferson County Commission, and the Corporate Community we can collaborate to make the UAB Football Program Birmingham's Team and keep this program alive and well.

We must support the largest economic engine in this region and the UAB football program is an intricate part of our sports community that must stay in tact. Whether it is local funding or assistance in facilities for the football program we must look into these opportunities for the future of UAB football. I stand firm along with my colleagues in support of UAB Football. We look forward to meeting with boosters, alumni, faculty & staff, the administration, and even members of the board of trustees to show support for Coach Bill Clark ad the UAB Blazers Football Program.

Councilor Jay Roberson

According to another thread posted here, that ba**ard Bryant Jr. is lobbying "Pa Kettle" (bentley) to shut our football program down. Not sure if the city has enough testicular fortitude to make a difference, but if this is true, a definitive line in the sand needs to be drawn on this...It's sink or swim for UAB Football. I cannot believe this bull****!

Thats good that he supports UAB football and put in writing that he and the Birmingham political leaders would not let UAB go down without a fight.

Has any attempt been made to get national media (particularly national sports media) coverage of this situation?

Those who are anti UAB sports - mainly football - may feel they are running out of time to strike now that FBHC Clark has UAB on a more successful track. If winning continues and attendance improves as expected with success, they may lose their trump card of "fiscal protection" of the medical center. Yes, it has always been a lie, but lies are accepted if the objective of damaging B'ham is involved.

The Scarbinsky article and al.com stuff has been posted on Twitter and I'm sure, Facebook, I am following some national sports personalities and they've gotten the tweets and links, whether or not they find them newsworthy enough to speak on them remains to be seen.

I'm glad that people of the city gov't are coming out publically saying these things as that's what this needs yet the people it'd mean the most coming from stay silent on the matter when the opposite should be happening
