RE: Our band is tiny
I think some of it is a matter of giving out partial scholarships instead of full.

We've heard that before. If the band didn't pay anything, one should be in the band because they love it and the school too.

Be glad you have a scholarship, no matter what it is and press on.

I've said before, if we wanna be big time we need a big band. Surely the boosters can help with this. We need to double the size of the band without sacrificing the quality.

There in-lies the problem.

And I don't know how long it's been (if ever) since we offered anything more than we offer now. $1000 for the year.

We are on the lower half of average sized marching bands at around 230-250. Even MTSU's band who most hail as 'So much bigger' is only about 350.

It's not really that small.

Ok. When I was in the band, we had 250 members. Why can we not have more? I wonder the same as all of you. I have a degree from Baylor also, 15k students, and Baylor's band has 300 members. Why do we not have more? I'm glad someone asked this...maybe our President can answer this also because all other big schools support larger bands than we have. The MSOS is awesome and I wish it'd get more support.

RE: Our band is tiny
Or how about this? Memphis clocks in somewhere between 230-250

Cincinnati Band: Between 200-250
UCF: 305
ECU: ~250
UCONN: 300+
Tulane: Just over 90
Houston: 350
USF: 330
SMU: 90-100

Just a sample of numbers from the other bands in our conference. As you can see, we are not the largest (And not even close to being the smallest).

But our band is not 'Tiny' By any means.

unfortunately not all students come from wealthy families who could pay those enormous tuition fees/activity-student fees each semester and do things just for the love of it.

Didn't someone say a few years ago that to be in the band you now have to be a music major? In the late 80's I had friends and fraternity brothers in the band and none of them were music majors. If this is the case it could explain the smaller numbers.

I had 2 that were MSOS members and neither were music majors. To be in the MSOS you have to audition but you do not have to be a music major.
There are music majors playing in the MSOS though as part of their course work.

Kicking the scholarship money may help some.
Currently the MSOS is around 185 - 190.

We need a bigger band. And they need to wear uniforms that are dark royal blue and medium gray instead of light royal blue and black. Furthermore, they should play the sounds and tunes which are commonly heard when you watch big-time college football on prime-time TV instead of the same stuff that we play at basketball games.

RE: Our band is tiny
Just a few points about the band from a parent whose son is in the band.

1. It's larger than last year, but smaller than 4 years ago when my daughter was in the band.
2. The scholarship aspect has been a partial scholarship for at least the last 6 years, from talking to members of the band, maybe longer. So the numbers game is not just that.
3. I was never much to notice the band activities until my kids got into it. But as perspective:
A) they practice 3-4 days a week for about 3 hours.
B) on game day, it's about a 10 -12 hour gig for them. They come to the LB early to practice; they get to Tiger walk about 30 minutes before the team to entertain for the fans (they are quite entertaining); they perform again before pregame out in the lane for about 20 minutes, march in and then do the pregame show. Of course there is half time and playing in the stands.
C) I say all of this because it's not easy.
4. My son does not do it for the money, it's only $1,000, he does it because he's a tiger fan and he loves his school and he loves band.
5) also band is a class, you miss one gig without a valid excuse (like doctor note excuse) you fail.

I know, why don't we play the Florida State Indian chant song. No we play songs that relate to the tigers, like eye of the tiger and some Memphis tunes. Of course the time they get to play has been reduced for advertising moments.
