Turn back the clock about 70 years and call themselves Tennessee State or UT-Memphis

Hasn't been a problem for Miami, Pitt or Louisville.

Auburn would have made the big time if they would have been called UA-Auburn or Alabama State! 03-shhhh

Land Grant rural college vs commuter school. Nice comparison there Kemosabe

Hasn't been a problem for Miami, Pitt or Louisville.

They also weren't Miami State, Pittsburgh State, or Louisville State for years before changing their name...

So you think the reason we are in this situation is because we were named Memphis State? I think it's because we've sucked at football for the better part of 50 years.

Miami - private school in the best recruiting area in the country

Pitt - once a private institution became public in 1966. Considered a "research" university.

Louisville -urban public but geographically fits into several different regions

Memphis - urban public school with so many name changes that I've lost count.

RE: Memphis and a P5 conference
All I have to say is that the day we join a conference that doesn't include teams where nicknames like Golden Hurricane, Green Wave, and Pirates exist, might as well add "Owls" to that, too, we will be in business.

But more of a serious note, they only two options I see that are feasible are joining either the Big XII or ACC.

In order to get into the SEC, we would have to seriously go absolutely nuts with our football and baseball. By that, just keeping winning. Beat the teams you are suppose to beat and beat UCLA, Ole Miss and of course, Kansas and Bowling Green.

No way I see us staying in this "American" long term. Just can't see it happening. Bowen and Rudd have to make something happen and I believe they will do something about it.

Bowen can have all the ideas in the world, but it wont mean a darn thing if fans don't show up

Fans can keep showing up, but nothing will happen until the team starts winning conference championships.

Another stupid comparison. UAB wasn't even a school until the late 70s and didn't have football until what the late 90s. Y'all keep trying doe. Smh

I'll never forget, Carpenter making a comment on the news when Rex Dockery was hired, that if Rex can't turn the program around in the next 5 years, we maybe ought to consider dropping it all together. Great recruiting tool huh? And when RC is considered an upgrade from Cavagnaro, it just goes to show what kind of bad shape our football program really was. It's a miraculous wonder we even have a football program today. Thankfully we now have, Rudd, Bowen and Fuente running things.

RC does deserve a lot of the blame true.....but remember who he was working for.
Football wasn't important to Shirley Raines...but his fundraising certainly was. Could it have been she who held him back?
Not trying to defend the guy...just wondering 'what if'?

RC didn't get here until 96. Our problems go back to the 60s maybe even further.

In the 60s I seem to recall that Memphis football was bigger than Memphis basketball.
