Serious Discussion: Is blaming D-68 on illegal immigrants racist?
it is a talking point that a number of conservative poster on CSN & numerous conservative websites have mentioned. The only problem is that I have yet to find any evidence from a legitimate source to back this claim up. For those who don't know the talking point is basically stating illegal immigrants brought the disease to the United States, specifically the recent wave of children.

What we know about D68:
1. First appeared in the US in 1962.

2. Has made "regular" appearances in the US since 1987

3. From 2008-2011 the disease appeared in six separate clusters located in the Philippines, Japan, the Netherlands, and 3 different US states from 3 different regions. (Georgia, Arizona*, & Pennsylvania)

*Arizona was the last of these six clusters to emerge.

4. I have yet to find a credible link reporting a case or cluster from a Latin American country

5. the 2014 initial outbreak originated in Missouri with the spread of new cases in states bordering MO and continued as a chain reaction from those states.

MO is far from a hotbed of immigration detention centers, and as okladixie showed in his own link (red is immigration centers, yellow & blue are proposed) the state doesn't have s single immigration center.

in fact it's pretty clear that this virus first appeared in parts of the country with fewer immigration centers than the rest of the country. so how in the world is this notion that there this virus first appeared in areas where large number of illegals were being sent is beyond me. that very talking point isn't even factually correct.

6. this outbreak hit Canada just as hard as the United states. Canada had its first case before half the states in the US did. Ontario has had over 100 cases. That is more than the number of cases in Texas, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, & California COMBINED.

so with all this in mind, how is this talking point not racist? blaming illegal immigrants for taking jobs, taxpayer money etc. is all fair game, but to blame a virus on them with zero evidence to support that it even originated from them is not IMO. Every bit of information we have about this points to the exact opposite of that.

Human society in general has a long standing history of blaming minorities, immigrants, etc. of causing diseases. Some back in the day argued that Jim Crow was necessary for disease control. I see this talking point which I personally think is disturbing how frequently people are using it as a modern day version of past racist attitudes.

To be clear I don't think people making this point are legitimate out of the closet racists, but rather people who don't realize just how racially insensitive this talking point is. So I ask the question. Is this racist?

RE: Serious Discussion: Is blaming D-68 on illegal immigrants racist?
Not racist at all. You could remove race completely and the concern being raised is still valid; unless of course you consider the term illegal immigrant to be inherently racist.
While it may not be accurate, it does raise questions about what infections diseases and medical conditions may have come across the border with that influx of illegal immigrant children. Why does the double standard exist that children born in the US must be vaccinated before attending public schools yet illegal immigrant children do not?

Let's not try to find a racist issue to further divide the country and distract from the real problem.

Is it racist to blame Ebola on Africans?

I don't believe in the concept that anyone should be faulted for having a disease originate in their community. however the big difference here is that ebola originated in Africa, this D68 outbreak has zero connection to illegal immigration.

But you do understand, I hope, that life is still sustainable when racism isn't a factor, yes?

sorry but there clearly is an anti illegal immigrants stigma in this country. stigmas give people a way to needlessly blame something on some demographic when it is unwarranted. i think this clearly fits the bill.

You do realize that someone promoting what could be interpreted as racist claiming that said statement is not racist is nothing new right???

There is no double standard, we are currently servicing 7 undocumented immigrants and they have all been vaccinated.

Secondly, this is what happens when you make immigration to the United States so difficult.

If we simply quarantined and vaccinated immigrants like we did in the past, things would be a lot safe from an infectious disease standpoint.

Uhhh, yeah, there IS an anti illegal alien push in this country. WhoTF wants illegal aliens crapping up our nation? As a Conservative, I want you to EARN your right into this nation. EARN.

And just so we're clear on what it means to EARN something...:

Earn -
1. to gain or get in return for one's labor or service:
to earn one's living.
2. to merit as compensation, as for service; deserve:
to receive more than one has earned.
3. to acquire through merit:
to earn a reputation for honesty.
4. to gain as due return or profit:
Savings accounts earn interest.
5. to bring about or cause deservedly:
His fair dealing earned our confidence.

Oh. So now that we've been flooded with illegals and they aren't vaccinated like they used to be and the Enterovirus is plaguing us, it's just a coincidence... GOT IT

They are being vaccinated. What I'm saying is that in the old days, that is all they needed to do to gain access legally to the country.

Now, they have to jump through so many hoops, it's easier to simply cross illegally.

If immigrants knew that they only needed to pass a criminal background check and get vaccinated to gain access to the country, we wouldn't have this problem.

I perfectly proved that there is absolutely no connection to illegal immigration. so you saying otherwise with zero evidence to support that claim is something you can do on the WWE forum, but not on this one.

Is it really a stretch to understand how illegal aliens would be viewed with scorn? They are breaking our law, that is why they are called "illegal". They deserve no less stigmatization than others engaging in illegal acts. Pedophiles, murderers, con artists, and yes, even illegal aliens earn that scorn and mistrust through their very actions (their children born in the US are another discussion).

I guess I'll say it.

John says there's no connection between the D-68 virus and the illegal immigrants..

Link up John.

The first case was in KC.. He's right.. However, is it foolish to think that illegal immigrants had not made it to KC or anyone from KC had not traveled and possibly not made contact with an illegal immigrant.

It's very rare by even your own post that these clusters happen. Now we have an influx of people coming into the country and an influx of people getting sick.

So now crossing the border illegally is akin to pedophilia, and murder?

I perfectly understand why it is that way as I stated in the post. but regardless there is no excuse to blame a virus on a demographic when we have zero evidence to support that. remember that this talking point was not just blaming illegal immigrants, it specifically blamed children. so do you think children who didn't have much of a say in their parents decision should be stigmatized just as much as other illegals. and are you really trying to compare an entire demographic to pedophiles? I mean come on man.

No you didn't, you haven't even inserted a single talking point explaining how I am wrong. all you have said is "you are wrong" which isn't how this forum operates.

oh so making made up claims that Mexicans killed someone else child is perfectly okay because anyone illegal is okay to be stigmatized?

sorry but I don't understand how in any circumstance this is okay.
