So it costs $27 to buy $20 worth of tickets?

I was curious too. $10 = $13.50. Fine print, I assume.

Just go to the ticket office during the week and buy your tickets. Walk ups have always been a major portion of the Tigers crowds. When weather is good and team is winning then be prepared to stand in line.

If not, this trend will continue. Note I am not applying this to the third party ticket brokers...but when you buy the ticket from the source..especially in person, their should be no fees. Or they need to be more honest in their pricing promotions.

That's what I think, too.

If you advertise $5 tickets, then don't hit me up for an additional $5 in BS fees. That crap pisses people off. $10 is a bargain for a college football game, so instead focus on the truth.

You just don't get it. If you are provided the "privilege" of using a credit card, the merchant banker charges a fee that is deducted from the merchant (UM in this case) before the merchant ever sees your payment. Therefore in order to just get the $5 ticket price, there has to be a service fee to cover the merchant banker charge. Our university also paid someone a substantial fee to write the software to make ticket sales via the internet. And to take sales via the internet, the service has to meet certain privacy criteria (PCI compliance) which requires a security certificate. All of this convenience cost money, therefore the service fee. If you don't like it, then spend your money driving to the ticket office instead.

But the truth is, the university, even with the service charge, will be fortunate to even realize the $5 ticket price given the other costs to offer you the privilege to use the service convenience. This is the definition of petty..........even so, the adage nothing is free when it comes to business applies in this and every other case I know.

It is true that merchants are being squeezed by the credit/debit card companies to process payments.

A few weeks ago my wife and I were at a furniture store making a down payment on a substantial purchase. I had my debit card out and the sales lady pulled me aside and said that if we paid BY CHECK or cash, they would discount 8%! Obviously I don't carry around that kind of cash and we never carry our checkbook. So we told her we would be right back and when we got home my wife ran up there with a check right before they closed.

I couldn't believe that, she said the processing companies were killing them on fees. I guess on high price items it adds up.

Seems like they'd encourage people to order online???

Have you never bought a ticket online before? Try Ticketmaster, or Vendini or any of them & you'll see it's simply the way it is.

And that's why they do it.

Why is a draft beer $10?

On principal I agree. Would seem that an online solution would not have the charges since should be cheaper to process. The worst case scenario should be a transaction fee. Fees for each ticket is over the top (imo).

Some people say that is the way it goes these days or ticket master is worse. I think that misses the bigger point is of whether it is fair or should be acceptable. If more people would say 'no way' just a few times then we wouldn't get these ridiculous fees. Another example...why do you pay separately for unlimited texting when you are already paying for a data plan.

Processing could be as much as 3% of the purchase price. Speaking as a retailer, though, we always appreciate cash. There are other reasons than processing fees...just sayin

But here's something people probably don't know. If you pay with a rewards card of any type, the retailer has to pay more to get that processed. lol, Imagine that.

RE: $5 charge to buy online?
Most people know that credit cards charge merchant fees...smaller merchants more.

THAT issue is a different one from the idea of hidden convenience fees, especially when there is not convenience, such as when you go to the ticket window.

With that, the credit card fees that merchants pay are their cost of doing business and they need to plan accordingly. Just as cups are part of the restaurant business. Merchants build that into their overall cost, as most do with their estimated credit card fees.

Some people would not give the specific merchant any business of they did not take credit cards...something else to consider.

But, knowing about the fees, we always try and pay cash to smaller merchants..locally owned...like a car repair shop, because they feel the extra more directly, even if they likely already charge me a little more because of the idea of their fees.

Well, it's $7, but I get your point.

And BTW, people, 3% of $10.00 is 30 cents. Not $5....

RE: $5 charge to buy online?
If you use a credit card to purchase anything, and in this case, a ticket, the bank will charge a percentage or a flat fee for the service. This don't include the monthly fee or the minimum monthly purchase. And, if they don't get a minimum monthly purchase, they give them a surcharge.

So, my guess, is that they are trying to cover the credit card charges and the cost to run a commercial website every month.

I guess the only thing I was thinking.....Giving a customer 8% discount on cash is understandable..on a check not so much. 8% is a way bigger discount than the fees charged. Kind of interesting.
