It's a Shame
At this point in the season, that is about all I can say. It's a shame how much national recognition Toledo could be getting right now, if the defensive scheme, that our coach loves so much, didn't suck so much. People keep talking about wait until Hunt returns, but Swanson seems to be doing a pretty good job. It's a shame, we've sucked so much, that guys like Hunt and Swanson won't be mentioned on national college football shows, until the end of the season about some secondary bowl game. It's a shame Toledo can't coach or find db's that can cover someone and turn their heads to look at the ball, at the same time. It's a shame, that despite putting up 30 points, Toledo still lost to a Power 5 bottom feeder. It's a shame that this coaching staff still can't figure out what to do or how to coach/teach an offense to execute in the redzone. It's shame, that this year is Toledo's best chance of winning the MAC, because Northern Illinois' offense is down and not because Toledo has improved. It's all just a shame.

It will be a shame if UT wins the MAC West and the MACC. It's also a shame that people that have visions of the Michigan and Penn State wins
as fantastic, when in fact those were crappy FBS teams.#9 Pitt ended up being a mediocre team when the Rockets upset them. Also Gary Pinkel only won one MAC title in 10 years as HC.The 35-0 streak probably would not have occurred if UT was playing the type of schedule it played during the 2000's. Reality is UT is a nice MAC program. It has NEVER really kicked butt on a true top 10 team. Please take your colored glasses off.
Right now Rockets need some MAC titles in the worst way. You crawl
before you walk. I don't believe the DB personnel is that much worse than the rest of the MAC. There are breakdowns in coverage which is Coaching.
Our defensive calls are too obvious. Need improvement before UMass, NIU BGSUX,etc.

RE: It's a Shame
I'm not commenting on how the DB's should be coached because it is not as simple as turning their heads. Pretty tough to pick up the ball and keep coverage. The entire unit has to be doing their job for the secondary to succeed. Blitz schemes have been more effective, but seems the secondary is still playing soft on a blitz. Have to know if QB audibles out or the receiver picks it up and changes the route to something short. Tough to do. But we are not in synch on it IMO and its nothing more than an opinion from what I see. The coaches have forgotten more than I know about football, but I still am allowed to be frustrated and whine every so often. No one has made me an offer to come coach for them based on my opinions on this board and I don't even coach a fantasy football team.

Those wins over Penn St or Michigan may not seem fantastic to you but it's something I can brag about around my OSU friends

RE: It's a Shame
Consider every other MAC team losing a qb, #1 rb, a starting de and two corners after three weeks. How do they respond? Well teams with a loss in this conference didnt have that much happen to them. Considering we are a very deep football team and are 3-0 in the MAC and played a tougher OOC than most of the MAC. 4-3 will have us ready to win out. Or go 8-4 with some help and go to the title game where anything is possible. With our guys we are missing i bet we are 5-2 maybe 6-1.

The way I see it you need four main things for the makings of a good team. Good recruiting, good athletes, good coaching, and athletes that can learn something from those coaches. We have three of those. You guess which one I feel we don't have. Our team looks extremely confused out there. I don't think it's their fault. We have an awful lot of good ball players and good team but not a great team.

RE: It's a Shame
Have great respect for Boca's passion on this board. He is one of the best posters.
But I must disagree with "The 35-0 streak probably would not have occurred if UT was playing the type of schedule it played during the 2000's." statement.
Those teams would have been just as successful. There were talented athletes two deep at almost every position with size especially in the DB's. When you look, back then, at everything from our lousy facilities, substandard equipment, no practice facility, etc., that team delivered far better than any UT team has since. Period! They would have relished the chance to play ONE of those teams, let alone 3 of them.
They would have easily beaten Missouri, Cinci and ISU this year. Sad truth was that this was THE year for us.
I have been of the opinion that our FB program has not delivered the goods for some time. I totally agree with the thought that this was a potential break out year for us and we let it slip away. We had the chance to win any of those games (possible no for Cinci with our terrible start) and we flat out did not. Not sure how you change that. MC is a good coach who might be a little soft on the team. The kids have the best situation in the MAC when you look at media coverage, metro size, facilities, academic support, academic programs to choose from, equiptment, you name it. Lets at least get a MACC out of this but like the thread states...It is a shame.

I would love to hear what, 'A little soft" means. I am a high school coach and parent of a player and I can state that what my son has done year after year is not "little" or "soft" and I have visited around 20 D 1 programs over the last 6 years on a regular basis. Norrils loss along with the other corners who have missed have been exactly what opponents have attacked hard. Experience is the best learning tool and it hurts not having his experience out there.

I never mentioned the wins over Penn St, Michigan, and Pitt. While good wins, I would agree that they weren't earth shattering. So I guess I'll take off the glasses, I never put on. I just think it's a shame that we have a top 30 to top 25ish offense (at least on the ground), and one of the worst defenses in all of college football. A top MAC school should never lose to Iowa St.

It's a shame that some people think this season is already down the drain. We're 3-0 in the MAC. At this point in the season, I would say UT is also the favorite to win the MACW and play in the MACC.

I think that most people still actually believe that the Rockets are probably on their path to winning the MAC Championship. But what they (we) also believe is that the Rockets aren't going to do it because they are that good but because the MAC truly is that bad...arguably the worst conference in all of D1 football this year. We all hope that a MAC Championship is in the near future for our guys but it isn't anything like what Rocket fans were accustomed to in the past and the repeated frustrating play by the defensive secondary year after year helps breed the apathy in the fan base as well as always coming up short.
And yes, you can point to Pitt not finishing #9 in 2003 or whatever year that was and Michigan and Penn State not being the greatest teams but you can not count them out as great wins of UT time. They certainly aren't in the same hemisphere as a loss to previously 1-5 Iowa State or whatever they were coming into the game. If those wins weren't marquee wins for the program then UT themselves wouldn't have produced videos with scores and information about those past wins.
As this college football season rolled around, I was interested in seeing whatever games I could but that was about it. No excitement or enthusiasm like in most years. If the Rockets win, that's awesome. If they lose, well life goes on. I have a feeling that many more Rocket fans will go into next season with that same apathetic feeling. It's nothing bad and it is what it is. We've got a ton of great young men on the team and they are great citizens, students, and athletes. That's the part I'm most happy about.

RE: It's a Shame
Interesting Thread--- Reading it reminds me of the Kubler-Ross 5 stages of grief and it is interesting see what stages different fans are currently experiencing. In case you don't know, the five stages that evolve in sequence are (from start to finish):
1) Denial----"we were the better team, we only lost because of (choose one or more: injuries, the refs, mistakes, bad coaching) and we can get that corrected and be just fine".
2) Anger--- "what was he thinking? How could he call that play? Why don't they stick to what was working? How can he not catch that ball? Scholarship players ought to be able to tackle, where is the fire and emotion?etc etc, who paid the refs?"
3) Bargaining---being ranked in the top 25 is nice but if we can win the MACC no one will care about P5 losses or the top 25.
4) Depression ----"we suck" and always will until we get a new (choose one or more: db coach, taller dbs, new OC, team attitude). We will never be any good until we get out of the MAC and at this rate that is never going to happen.
5) Acceptance----"the gap between the P5 and G5 is growing and UT is never going to be a national powerhouse in football----it is what it is. The Rockets are going to be stuck in the MAC forever and we may as get used to it."

However this season ends, and I'm sure it will end well. I am sure we will be at Ford Field and a bowl game. Did anyone out there ever think about all the comments made last about our team not deserving a bowl game may have cost us one? That being said it, would be a SHAME if we did not get there because of what was said here, or anywhere as far as that goes.

Iowa states three worst opponents are kansas toledo ndsu and texas... They arent that bad guys. They beat iowa and i believe they would be 6-0 with iowas schedule. Its tough to beat kansas state, oklahoma state and baylor.
