Open try outs
Read something interesting on Mlive.

When WMU was struggling with it's kicker Doolittle ran open tryouts. A band member won the job. That was Dale Livinston. He went on to play for several years in the NFL.

Not true.

Livingston won an intramural kicking competition.

Doo gave HIM a try out.

He played two years with Bengals, one with Packers.

RE: Open try outs
Dale Livingston was my suite mate in Ellsworth!

His father was the band director Plymouth High School, wouldn't let him play football. Coach Doolittle didn't have tryouts. Art Jevert was the IM director he held a Pass, Punt and Kick contest for the IM campus.
Dale won every category. He was a sophomore, got a scholarship as Junior. Still holds all WMU kicking records from back in 1964 - 1966.

We put a Ellsworth 2B (floor) flag team together and we won the campus championship. Dale Livingston was our QB he could throw a tight spiral 50 yards. Dale kickoff from behind the goal line 60 yards long, we never had a kick returned.

Amazing athlete, played for Packers for about 5 years, died of cancer last year.

RE: Open try outs
Dale no longer holds any WMU kicking records except tied for longest punt.

He kicked 1965-67 for Doo and Broncos, one year (1970) for Packers after two with Bengals.

Died in 2009 after battling Hodgkins' for over a decade.

RE: Open try outs
Your probably right on the year and records!

But it was the intramural championship and our team that convinced him to enter the PPK where he won every category!

Art Jevert was an instructor and I know he held the competition and told "Doo" about Dale.

Yes, Dale did spend lots of his later years fighting cancer, he came back for W Club award the year before he died.

RE: Open try outs
Came back to be inducted into WMU Athletic HOF (not W Club award).

I nominated him. Used to shag balls sometimes for him at old Kanley practice fields when I was a kid. Inspired me to start kicking-punting which got some of my college years paid for.

From '65-'67 WMU was 18-9-1. Dale's kicking was big factor in at least ten of the wins and the tie, and in winning '66 MAC championship.

I was born in Green Bay-grew up on Lombardi Packers so I was thrilled when he signed with them.

On the contrary, anything but, that's the irony.
