RE: Herd #26 in Coaches Poll...
Guess we'll just have to root for whomever plays Stanford, GT, Mizzou, and Clemson to give them an 'L' so we can move up.
Looking over the list of coaches, I see several teams that we play/have played this season. My hope is that as more coaches see our team first hand, the more our stock rises, and the more votes we get.

RE: Herd #26 in Coaches Poll...
Marshall gained 49 points this week with a decisive win and still doesn't have enough votes to get to 100 points; meanwhile East Carolina added 196 points and is up to 451 with a shaky win. A barely above .500 Memphis received 5 points and is closer to Marshall than the Herd are to #24, let alone trying to catch East Carolina.
The only thing to me that could justify that is the Herd's strength of schedule or the perception of the conference as inferior. The Herd have to run the table AND blow out all their conference mates running up the score!

First, this early in the season, there should be no 2 loss teams in the top 25. Sorry Stanford and Clemson maybe around week 10 you should be there but not yet.
Notre Dame in the Top 10, seriously?!? Their opponents have a combined record of 12 - 15. They've only beat one team with a winning record. I don't see them any higher than 15.

You do realize Memphis' two losses were against top 20 teams, and we've blown out Austin Peay, MTSU, and Cincinnati...

The media has a love-affair with Not Our Dame. It just amounts to that. The year that they played for the mystical nat'l championship proves what I posted.

your calling a 3 TD, 21 point win shaky, where our QB had more passing yard than SMU had in total. Yes, SMU hasn't had a good start, but don't forget they've played 4 ranked teams so far. I'll take a shaky 21 point wins the rest of the way. Sure we didn't play our best. But, SMU gave 110% and still lost by 21 giving up 410 threw the air and 171 on ground. People saw that aswell and know if we had played the way we can and have it would have been a 50+ point victory. I was at the game, I never had a felling we would lose, we slept walked to a 21 point win.

RE: Herd #26 in Coaches Poll...
I have to say guys, that ECU deserves their ranking. When you beat Virginia Tech and North Carolina )both ranked at the time), and lose only to NC State, who gave Florida State a go, then they completely deserve where they are. And if things continue, they will get the Access Bowl win in all likelihood. Nothing we can do to change that.
Look, if Louisville hadn't bailed on us, we might have something to say if we had played them and won, but strength of schedule DOES matter. There might have been a time when Ohio and Miami (O) would have been kinder to us in that regard, but not this year. But we consciously, scheduled those teams for fan friendly, OOC games, and I have no problem with that. But we have to live with what that brought us, at least this year.
We just need to take care of our own business and take each game, one at a time, with our A game, and we'll be fine. ECU has to do the same. If they lose a conference game, they're toast in the poll business. The only thing we need to worry about is Middle Tennessee, right now. We can't control the rest of it, and we were architects of our own schedule...we have to deal with that.

They lost to South Carolina not NC State. If they'd lost to NC State we wouldn't even be having this conversation. They'd have hung themselves.

We'll be alright of we keep winning. We have the #1 offense in the country and the #12 scoring defense in the country. We are top 5 in the country in converting third downs and preventing the conversion of third downs.
I keep looking at Akron since people say we haven't played anyone. They have the #17 scoring defense after 5 games. They shut out their FCS opponent, gave up 21 to Penn State, 10 to Pitt and 6 to EMU this week. That's a total of 37 points in 4 games, 2 against P5 teams. We scored 41 against them in less than 3 quarters. I think they'll be 6-2 when they play Bowling Green at home. If they win that game they should win the MAC east and have a shot at winning the MACC.

Thank you, so true. Had we lost to NCSUx that we beat 48-28 last year, heads would be rolling.

Akron doesn't really help Marshall, they lost 21-3 to PSU, beat a bad Pitt by 11, beat a no body FCS. The rest of their schedule is all MAC. Marshall is taking care of business and if you continue you will be ranked, but you have zero wins against the T 25 or P5 wins. Losing the UofL game killed your SOS and could prevent Marshall from playing in the access bowl, if ECU now at 19th keep winning passing us will be next to impossible. Then the committee comes into play and the only rankings that matter, their rankings.

RE: Herd #26 in Coaches Poll...
If people voting in these polls actually paid attention to all of college football, Marshall would already be in the top 25. Sure Marshall's schedule isn't great but that doesn't change the fact that their team is good, REALLY good.
I mean UNC started the year in the polls FFS what had they done at any point in recent memory to warrant that? If you look at Marshall's schedule so far they are putting up the kind of scores you would expect to see a top 25 team put up. Sure they haven't played the toughest schedule but it's not like their eeking by these teams either.
In any event if Marshall beats a solid MTSU team they will be in the polls as they should be.
And to the poster who pointed out Marshall's votes vs WVU's, how can you be so insensitive? Don't you know their players are starving because of lowly programs like Marshall and ECU?

RE: Herd #26 in Coaches Poll...
I highly doubt passing ECU will be impossible or even hard for that matter. ECU may lose which would obviously help but even if they win out a couple things would most likely happen.
1. The UNC & VT wins might not be as magical as the day they took place. I personally think UNC will finish near the bottom of the ACC & VT will be middle. Still solid wins but not Top 25 wins.
2. ECU will eventually stop rising no matter what. That always happens and if ECU & MU win out the 13-0 will look better than 11-1 especially when it's broken down and the dominance MU put up is in the numbers. No matter what kind of schedule is played if the winning team is dominant that's hard to say they arnt worthy.
3. MU will jump ECU especially once the undefeated teams start to dwindle. Voters have a natural inclination to vote undefeated teams higher.
4. Marshall is better than ECU and would beat them by 4 TDs or more

I think Clemson is a top 25 team….Especially now that they have moved on to that freshman QB, he is the real deal. They lost to a pretty good Georgia team and FL State (should have won the game). Also they just beat a team that FL State struggled with 41-0.

RE: Herd #26 in Coaches Poll...
The polls are garbage. If anything what happened with the sec teams today proves that. All these teams just start jumping and not dropping below other teams inexplicably. If we aren't going to prove things on the field, the least we could do is get rid of these things until week 6 or so.
ECU vs Marshall is going to be and interesting debate as long as both teams keep winning. I can listen to arguments for both teams getting the access spot, and I don't think there is going to be a correct choice.

In fairness, it's easier to move up the poll than move into the poll. Everyone (or most everyone) had ECU in their polls, and unless they only win by single digits, voters are loathe to move a team down after a victory. Whereas if you're not in a voter's poll, you're in the soup with a bunch of other Top 25 wannabes. Then if you win, you have to go up against those teams, and if they have better wins, they pass you (Utah, for example).
