Feminists Outraged Over “Sexist” Jeopardy Category “What Women Want”…

It’s almost like feminists are perpetually miserable.

Quote: What is sexist and relies on tired stereotypes? That would be Monday night’s “Jeopardy!” category “What Women Want.”

The category name itself reduces half the population into a very ridiculous “Jeopardy!” category, full of trite stereotypes. Yet, somehow this category slipped through the censors, and it was allowed out of the 1950s and into 2014.

“A pair of jeans that fit well, like the 525s from this brand,” was one of the clues. It came came in toe with the answer, “What is Levi’s?” Other clues would lead viewers to believe that all women want is to sip tea, attend Pilates classes and to have our husbands help us with the vacuuming. Yep, this happened.

Yea my girlfriend and I argued about this last night. I said if she was really worried about advancing women's rights she would focus on real issues and not stuff like this. The fake outrage from this is noise. A few angry women and their blogs.

I'm hoping they were a bunch of women.

I mean, let's not act like that category isn't pandering to a lowest common denominator viewer, but it's a game show and not an employment bill.

If the thing had said "what men want" and had these as answers:

Beer
Football on Saturdays (and Sundays!)
Bigger biceps
A big pick up truck

Would anyone have been offended? Probably a few people, probably women actually.

It's a lighthearted game show, there is nothing for people to be be offended at.

Yep, we'd probably be nodding our heads, and proclaiming, "yep, yep, that's us and raising our brewskis in salute".

Some people wake up looking for a reason to be offended. These people must live miserable lives and are better ignored and left to their own loneliness.

What does a magazine like Vogue or Marie-Claire do, but pander to the 'stereotypes' of women? What does Maxim do but pander to stereotypes of men.

We need to quit trying to blur the line between accepting something as a stereotype and accepting that even if MOST do something, it doesn't mean they ALL do.

Stereotypes are based on experiences... not with individuals, but with large groups of people. If you're talking about a large group, MOST stereotypes WILL hold true (as a majority) else they wouldn't be stereotypes. MOST women like to shop and worry (in one way or another) about the size of their butts. MOST men don't put the seat back down and ALSO worry (in one way or another) about the size of women's butts.

If a lion were to approach you in the wild, would you ASSUME the stereotype and let the lion prove you wrong? If asked to eat puffer fish, would you not at least consider your odds? If asked to roll some dice in an even money game, what numbers would you pick and why?

Aren't we (as a people) better than this? Apparently not.

This!!

I would characterize a large portion of this board to fall into that group. How many people here are offended over their being offended?

first I've heard of this. maybe its a fringe group "outraged" and you are simply playing to the lowest common denominator?

Starting with many of the people posting on this messageboard, who are part of fringes groups who get offended at other fringe groups being offended.

I'm willing to be 99.99% of people that saw this wouldn't think twice about it. Unfortunately, that .01% has a platform where they can complain about it to the majority of the developed world with just a few keystrokes.

But who is to blame? The people for complaining, or those complaining about their complaints and bringing them to a far larger audience?
