I have no problem with this either...but...I do not tip hotel staff unless they do something special for me outside of their normal duties. I call fabrics on the 70% tipping figure also.

^^^This. Just understand that a $2 tip left for the maid is more than they typically get and will do a better job.
Before anyone posts that they are being paid to clean your room, just remember that there is a difference between cleaning your room and CLEANING your room.

If people want to supplement their incomes similar to waitresses...fine.

Lol, then they have no room to complain.

I would leave a tip for their laundry people either. Or their tax accountants.
Or their liquor suppliers. Or for the company that did their re-roof.
That's ridiculous.

If i stay and it's a one night only stay. No.
If I stay multiple nights, yes. My usual number I think is up to 5% of the room rate per night, depending on how well they do the job. (There have been times when they did such a horrible job, I didn't).

RE: Hotel chain's program encourages tips for maids
Here is what one travel site says on tipping the maids...
1. Tip daily. The same maid may not service your room every night of your stay. If you wait until check-out time to tip for the entire stay, your tip may not go to the right person.
2. Mark your tip clearly. Leaving cash or change in the room is not a clear enough signal, as a hotel maid must be very careful about taking anything from your room. Enclose the tip in a sealed envelope (check the desk drawer for hotel stationary) and mark it "Chambermaid."
3. Leave your tip in an obvious place. On the television, on a pillow, or on the bathroom counter are all common places to leave the maid's tip.
4. Tip according to service and hotel type. In a luxury hotel, tip about $3-5 each night. For an average hotel, $1-2 per night is fine. If the maid goes above and beyond in service, such as providing extra soaps and shampoos or folding towels in the shape of swans (for example), feel free to leave a dollar or two more.
5. Don't tip for poor service. Like all tips, if you're not satisfied with the service the maid is providing, don't leave a tip (or reduce the amount you would tip).

There are people like me that find the tip jar at Subway contemptuous,
but I tend not to be a follower of pop culture customs.

+1 on both points AA. I can't tell how pissed I get when I see a tip jar next to the cashier at a Moes or even at a drive in window!!

Yep, giving a tip just because there is a jar by the register is mindless.
Heck! the burger maker at McDonald’s doesn’t posture for a tip and I
don’t have to walk him through every single step of making a sandwich.

I usually do multi night stays, but when I do 1 night stays, I also keep the do not disturb hanger on the entire time. I don't understand the need for someone to enter my room on a one-night stay anyway.
As to maid tipping, this is an European custom that the industry is now trying to bring to the states. The last one they tried to import was the "if you don't want your towels or sheets washed" campaign.
Well, I began working in my youth at a Beach hotel (would be a stretch to call it a "resort") around 1982 and tipping the maids was pretty common even then for the people who did tip. Meaning it's been around a loooong while, not some new Euro-weenie "custom".
That said, the idea that it's anywhere near 70% is laughable. This clown needs to either do better research or go work in a hotel for a week or two. I'd put the actual number probably closer to 20% MAX. Another akademik, know nothing, fraud.
I'll usually leave a couple bucks or so per day, especially back in the day when traveling for business with partners. It could sometimes be akin to cleaning up after a frat party or hair band had stayed there on occasion... Then it was 10 bucks or more.

I think there are definitely exceptions, but tipping maids is customary in Europe and not the US. Even at the 4-start I worked at, it was not usual...maybe less than 10% of people tipped..and most of those were on special floors or had special requests.
But, I do agree that the number is laughable. And, the things you mention are the type of things where I would definitely leave a tip. In the end, the Marriot should probably pay their people a bit more instead of leaning on their guests...heck, the Marriot isn't cheap.

IMO, Chipotle is better for you. Moe's is good and messy. Chipotle is tasty and neat, plus they have better drinks.

RE: Hotel chain's program encourages tips for maids
We have been staying at the same motel in Nags Head for the past 25 years or so and in the same room for the past 15. The same maid has taken care of our room for the same 15 years. She goes the extra mile for us and we reward her appropriately for her personal service.
But for a random night in a Holiday Inn or some such I have never left a tip.
