To TN? I thought you were a Memphis fan? Guess not

As his username suggests, he lives in San Diego. You'll be hard pressed to find people who would choose Memphis over San Diego if they could afford SD.

You'll be hard pressed to find many people who have lived elsewhere to chose Memphis over that particular place. The Pacific Northwest is particularly good for you homebodies that would disagree.

You are a genius. Me and my family just go our first travel trailer RV and we are having a blast with it. Trying to find some new trips coming up this Fall and Winter.

Pacific NW is great but expensive. It really depends on the money and Tennessee and Memphis have a low cost of living and no state income tax. That's a game changer right there.

South Florida if you have over a week. Hundreds of camp grounds down there. Dauphin Island, AL has a nice campground too right near the water.

Tennessee has experienced a steady influx of migration from other Southern states, and more recently from the rest of the country as well. Residents over 50 make up nearly two-thirds of the increase in migrants. In 1980, just 11 percent of the state's seniors were born in other states, but now that figure is up to 17 percent.

J, I've always thought that an RV vacation out west would be pretty cool for a week or two...would you recommend any business that rents these vehicles by the week?

I like the idea, but an RV can't take me most of the places I want to go.

I have a friend who took early retirement, sold their house and are traveling all over the country but they have a 5th wheel. Up in the NW right now. Having a blast.

I have a cabin on Greer's Ferry Lake but could not live here. In fact up here now having a glass of wine.

yep, San Diego is truly an amazing city. You guys should come and check it out ... not that far from LA either - if you are coming to the UCLA game, I suggest you drive down south to SD and check it out ... you won't be disappointed.

She graduated, twice, from Ole Miss. The boys from Miss State, their spouses from Oklahoma and Bama. Our daughter and her husband from Memphis. They all like football, but it seems we can never root for the same team under any scenario, but can pull for Bama in national championship games...but not Auburn.

You have a very complicated household. Yikes!

I love Florida, but the summers in South Florida can be very hot and humid. And housing is very expensive very near the beach in places like Sarasota, as you might expect, but a mile or two away there are a lot of smaller houses at very reasonable prices. A lot of them are termite-eaten, though.
Sarasota is where I intend to end up in retirement.

Love me some Siesta Key

Then we can meet on the beach at sundown with a beverage and continue our "discussion" about the ACA. 04-cheers

I'm on Siesta Key as often as I can get down to visit my daughter. It's what keeps me sane.

Years ago I found Siesta Key by accident. Looking for a spot to park the RV on a trip further south and found a small RV park at the southern tip of the key on maybe Midnight Pass Road? Sanibel/Captiva is my favorite local down that way.

Sounds like you were out on Anna Maria Island. I am discovering the Old Florida parts of Sarasota and Bradenton. Some really cool neighborhood bars and old rockers in them, like Dickey Betts. The Packing House is one of my favorites in Sarasota. The Circus venue is also kind of cool, and they have highwire acts at some of the concerts there. The Ringling mansion and arts museum and circus museum is awesome. The Tiki Hut is a cool place to watch the sunset and people watch. Turtle nest openings are fun, as is the drum circle on Sundays. I thinks it's on Siesta or Lido.

My mother and her parents spent their summers there with lots of other Memphians. The mothers and children took the train there during the week to get away from the Memphis heat, and the fathers came over on the weekends. Mom had a wonderful childhood there in the summers. She talked about the pool and the dances at night. I think the retirement homes are what used to be the cabins everyone rented.

Mom also loved Hardy.

I have chosen Memphis over every other place, EXCEPT for the Pacific Northwest. First place I ever went that tempted me to pick up my very deep roots here. My son is there, but it is not in my cards since having twin granddaughters here. I love all the places I have visited, but Memphis is unique, and it's home.

I bet a lot of them are in Nashville and Clarksville for military retirees. I can attest to the huge number of retirees who are moving from out of state to downtown Memphis, mostly from the North. They LOVE the lost cost of living and the entertainment and urban vibrancy and diversity and the architecture and views of the river, and the safety, and most of all, the friendliness of Memphians.

The traffic is hell but the weather is as close to perfection as you can get...stayed with a friend on the base there. Sat on the beach and watched those magnificent planes go in/out.
