over Memphis. Memphis was promised the next expansion slot when Seattle and Tampa Bay went in during the early 70s. Got screwed ever since.

The AlamoDome? Please.

If we had promised to build a new stadium as much as many back then didn't like the idea, during the 90's expansion then we would have gotten a team

We were a little hard headed about that but we had just expanded the Liberty Bowl for the NFL. It would have been fine for the 1994 NFL. That's all Jacksonville did was renovate their stadium while Charlotte built a new one.

It's stunning that Oakland won't build a new stadium for one of the greatest franchises in NFL history.

JJ will never allow that to happen.

Regarding the NFL thingy, I'm over it. Finally. And to top that, I have gone from hating the Titans to accepting them as my hometown's "regional" team. My beef was with Adams.

Jacksonville's stadium was already huge because of the Florida-Georgia game. Heck, they tarp it because it is too big for the NFL.

Unaware of this- but San Antonio is a much stronger option than Memphis.

Look what the Rams are doing to St. Louis. Edward Jones Dome is 19 years old and the team basically wants the city to build a new one at $700,000,000+. I'm surprised they (or any other team) aren't using us again.

It's no coincidence that the EJD, Oakland Alameda Co. stadium, and Qualcom in San Diego are easily the most outdated venues in the NFL and that St. Louis, Oakland, San Diego as well as Jacksonville are the cities most often mentioned for relocation.

In one aspect that might be true but trying to wedge a fan base between the Cowboys and Oilers/Texans-Houston is going to be tougher than coming to a city like Memphis that has been hunting for a NFL identity 50 years.

The Titans are just now creeping into the minds of most Memphis fans like K2 said. And even more still have a bad taste in their mouths about how they just showed up in Nashville after all the years Memphis fought.

The Raiders in Memphis would be incredible.

Raiders-Titans Monday night? Aw hell....

The State was not willing to help pay for a stadium in Memphis, which is why Nashville swooped in after decades of not being in the conversation. Being the state capital has it's advantages.

With the Grizzlies already here for 10+ years, could we support a NFL team, too? I don't think so.

Tiger football and basketball would really suffer IF it happened.

Certain restaurant chains (The Cheesecake Factory) won't come to Memphis, etc., because the economic demographics.

the city of memphis could always let them play at their stadium until they find a suitable city. the city of memphis knows how to bend over to accomodate.

The reality is that public subsidizing of sports venues is now unpopular. And the reason is that it generally makes bad economic sense for the community.

The baseball Cardinals wanted a publicly financed stadium, but had to settle for $25 million in tax breaks for Busch 3; oh, and they've won two WS and been to a third since then, and appear to be avoiding the soup line. It is no coincidence, either, that the stadium ended costing half as much as other public ally financed stadiums around the country.

I always wanted Memphis to get into the NFL, but we got the team right for us. The nfl is like google stock right now. Everybody wants a piece but can't really afford it. Let other cities go bankrupt while subsidizing them. & to make another point, there will be pro sports franchises in both San Antonio & Austin within the next decade. The I35 corridor is the most economically advanced region in the US. Dallas won't be able to keep it from happening.

Isn't the state still paying for the Titans stadium? I remember hearing the Preds arena is still being paid for. Memphis was pretty responsible and diligent with its deal with the. Grizz. I question whether an NFL team would consider such diligence an attractive advantage for their fleecing endeavors. Aside from previously mentioned teams/cities, Buffalo was overlooked. Populations of metros like San Antonio are like 50% bigger than Memphis (tho we probably could include more counties in ours to boost it).

Work toward MLS. Pretty cheap. Growing sport. Great for our international appeal. NFL's great too but expensive to enter now. NBA is poised to rival soccer in global popularity, franchise values have skyrocketed. We should focus on enhancing our appeal for sophisticated and educated internationals. Soccer, international students and high wage employers and workers, and a more innovative Memphis in May could be the next steps to that.

Spot on. Good post. & yes, MLS is where Memphis needs to focus. Build a 45k seat retractable dome stadium that the tigers can play in as well until the university is ready for an on OCS. Soccer is gonna be huge in 20 years with the influx of immigrants.

If they do come here, maybe Penny could be the manager. (Leonard would love it here.)

MLS is definitely looking to make a footprint into the southeastern part of the country. They're putting franchises in Orlando, Miami, and Atlanta. I could see Memphis and MLS soccer being a really good fit.

In the meantime, the Grizzlies and the NBA have been perfect for this city. I don't think NFL franchises can even consider Memphis anymore due to being part of the Titans' market.

Nashville's team has very little impact in Memphis.

A few transplants with no real sense perhaps.
