Old news, but I hadn't seen it.
Quote:UL QB Nixon suspended

Ragin' Cajuns reserve quarterback Jalen Nixon is suspended and backup cornerback Simeon Thomas is academically ineligible for the 2014 season, a UL spokesman said Monday.

Nixon, a Carencro High product, is "suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules," UL sports information director Matt Sullivan said.

The nature of Nixon's violation wasn't disclosed. He's expected to miss the entire 2014 season.

Sullivan said that both Nixon and Thomas, however, remain on the team, remain on scholarship and will be allowed to continue practicing with the team.

Both Thomas, if he comes academically eligible, and Nixon will have two seasons of eligibility remaining starting in 2015.

Nixon started last season as UL's No. 4 quarterback but he was its No. 1 backup behind starter Terrance Broadway for last December's New Orleans Bowl.

A redshirt freshman in 2013, Nixon played behind the injured Broadway in the Cajuns' 24-21 win over Tulane, going 2-of-2 passing for 14 yards and running seven times for 29 yards against the Green Wave.

Nixon, who also played on UL's special teams, finished the year 6-of-12 passing for 108 yards and one touchdown.

With Nixon suspended, the Cajuns return only two quarterbacks with UL game experience – senior-to-be Broadway, and redshirt-sophomore-to-be Brooks Haack, who spent most of last season as UL's primary QB backup.

Another reserve quarterback who was a redshirt freshman last season, Teurlings High product D'Shaie Landor, transferred after the season to Southeastern Louisiana.

The Cajuns added two QBs with their 2014 signing class, Jordan Davis of Klein Oak High in Texas and late-date commit Dalvin Populist of Northshore High.

UL also spent some of its spring practices this year developing a package designed for standout running back Elijah McGuire at quarterback.

Many will forget that AState played that entire 2011 season when we went 8-0 in league with only one Scholarship QB after our backup went down with an ACL Tear in Fall Practice. We had a Tight End playing Backup QB that season, and honestly are still trying to rebuild the QB Depth after that year.

Didn't know that either.

The Cajun program seems woefully lacking in the back up department for Broadway and I imagine there will be button holes cut every time he runs the ball.

The comment about putting in a package for McGuire to see some snaps as quarterback is intriguing. Don't know anything about this ability to throw the ball, but jeez, if he can, what a threat that would be. The kid can flat motor and is slicker than a couple of eels copulating in a jar of snot.

Brooks Haak is a very good backup and likely starter next season. He is just not as dynamic as Broadway with his feet, but he is a much better passer.

I will always remember our meeting in 2011. Mid 3rd quarter of a close game both QB's were each knocked out for a series, and the backups had to play. The result was two very good teams suddenly looked very mediocre. Your Backup threw a game changing pick in that one to win the game for us.

Every time Aplin ran the ball that year we were screaming for him to slide. I was shocked no one tried to take a cheap shot on his knee as the season went on simply knowing that he was our only option.

Every program cringes when thinking of their backup QB playing (except LSU fans). Haack is a very good backup and will play very well if called upon during the season.

I certainly hope you're right. What happened to him at South Alabama?

Troy always has a good QB. The problem is the play calling and clock management.

No thanks, I've seen enough 41-34 type games against you guys for a few years.

But, Corey's gone, so there's no way our offense can function without him...at least, that's what the talking heads say. 03-shhhh

First time in a very long time I'm not worried about our QB depth/situation. We have 6 QB's right now and 3 of them are in a battle royale for the #2 spot. I can't recall when we have had that "problem" ever!

That is a good position in which to find your team, CM.

Despite assurances from more than one Cajun fan that all is well at the qb position, I'm concerned. Next year will bring enough changes in lineups that the qb position will probably be the least of our worries, but not this year. It's intensified with Broadway's abilities and his injury.

It is really intriguing though the few words said about implementing some package for Elijah McGuire as qb. He's such a fine athlete he could probably pull it off.

I think the QB situation was far from the main reason. How about the defense in that game?

Well, it looked like nothing was working that night on either side of the line. Not sure what excuse the defense could give other than S. Alabama was better than anything they'd faced to that point....or sumtin along those lines.
