Be the CFP committee: 2007
The ultimate mess, but it’s not the BCS or CFP’s fault. Nobody wanted to make the title game that year. I guess I mostly go with Connelly on this one. Oklahoma won its last two (Big 12 champ) and LSU won the SEC champ game. But I’m going to tip my hat to Virginia Tech over Georgia. They won their last five (including the ACC champ rematch against Boston College). The early season LSU loss was ug-lee, but that’s easy enough in the playoff. They won’t play LSU in the first round. OSU vs. VaTech/LSU vs. Oklahoma.
Mess grade (how much controversy would exist)—D.
Staples: OSU, VaTech, LSU, Oklahoma

I agree with you and not with the author. This is a year when conference championships break ties.
VT does get punished for losing a game by 41 points to another team in the bracket.
UGA didn't win their division and got whipped pretty thoroughly by TN in their key game.
Missouri lost twice to the same team in the bracket.
Kansas just played a weak schedule and was behind OU and MU in the Big 12 pecking order.
West Virginia lost too late to a not very good team.

I agree with the possible exception on WVU. They lost while Pat White was hurt, right? The committee could easily slide them in with how much they said key injuries would be considered.
I agree that UGA and VT's blowout losses kill their shot.
Hawaii 2007 is the only unbeaten I don't think merits a shot. Their schedule is 50 spots lower in SOS than any other and they were not impressive with it.

WVU lost the last night of the season, which I think kills them. They were down to #9 in the polls after the loss to Pittsburgh. Just don't think they have any chance.
I think it's between Va Tech and USC, and I think given that Va Tech got murdered, and USC still had the reputation, USC would have gotten it.

RE: Be the CFP committee: 2007
Final BCS standings:
1 Ohio State 11-1 B1G champ
2 LSU 11-2 SEC champ
3 Virginia Tech 11-2 ACC champ
4 Oklahoma 11-2 B12 champ
5 Georgia 10-2
6 Missouri 11-2
7 USC 10-2 Pac 10 champ (tied)
8 Kansas 11-1
9 West Virginia 10-2 BE champ
10 Hawai'i 12-0 WAC champ
The Polls ranked Georgia higher than VT. The AP had Georgia 4 and Va Tech 5. However, the computers had VT as No. 1, and they were a conference champion. Another argument would undoubtedly come from Hawai'i, undefeated at no. 10, but my understanding of the CFP criteria is that it would leave them out. I think BCS standings reflect the likely view of the committee.

10 Hawai'i 12-0 WAC champ
The AP standings were in accord for the Top 4. Thus, despite the logjam, there was a solid consensus around the top 4. Further, all 4 were conference champions, while nos. 5 and 6 were not. I don't think there's any doubt that the top four BCS/AP schools get the nod from the committee. The biggest argument would undoubtedly come from Hawai'i, undefeated at no. 10, but my understanding of the CFP criteria is that it would leave them out.
I think USC replaces VT. Getting stomped will usually stomp your chances.
Hawaii would have an argument if they had played even a BAD schedule, but theirs was historically bad.
They played 3 teams in the top 100 (Boise, Washington, Fresno) and played 2 bad FCS teams, UNLV, and the bottom of the WAC. With such an easy schedule they had 5 wins of one score or less. SOS and their issues winning against it kills them off.
It's either West Virginia or USC. Neither got blown out and each was a power conference champ.
I think the league champ criteria and the fact they lost head to head with Mizzou kills off KU's shot.

Va Tech was #6 in Harris and #5 in coaches. And #5 in AP. So they were NOT in accord for the top 4 at all.

Final AP top 6:
1 Ohio St Big Ten Champ
2 LSU SEC Champ
3 Oklahoma Big 12 Champ
4 Georgia
5 Va Tech ACC Champ
6 USC Pac 10 champ

I fixed it while you were commenting. See my updated reasoning. VT was no. 1 in the computers.

1 thing to remember, the computers are the BCS computers- w/o MOV. Also, the gap between 1-9 was so thin, the eye test would come into play this year probably more than ever. I just don't see a committee looking past 48-7. Not when USC was that good.

USC lost to Stanford as 41 point favorites as home. Would be interesting to see if the committee punished them for that.

I wonder if Georgia may be more of a threat that year. They were #4 ahead of both USC and Va Tech. Didn't have the black marks that both USC and Va Tech had.

I'd give Georgia the nod. There should be consequences for losses like VT's and USC's.

UGA got blown out by Tennessee and because of it didn't even win their division.
If UGA, VT, and USC are all out then it probably needs to go to WV.
To me that last spot needs to be either USC or WV who didn't lose by huge margins.

48-7 isn't a huge margin?

Typo. Meant to say WVU

Losing to a 41 point dog at home is as bad as losing in blowout fashion on the road. I've never heard of a bigger point spread loss than USC's loss to Stanford.

They're both bad. The question would be which one the committee found to be worse. Esp with a SEC team in contention there.

1 point loss in rivalry game to 4-8 team. Black mark, but not nearly as bad.
