I wish I had your enthusiasm. I think interest in baseball will decline.

Baseball plays too many games and the games are too long. Plus there are no promotion of stars if there is any stars worth promoting

Baseball is dead. Thank McGwire and Sosa for killing a generation after 1994. Ya'll live in a baseball city The fan base ain't getting younger, and the games are too long and no allegiance to teams hurts in the long run. If baseball fans in Memphis didn't follow the Cardinals, would ya'll care as much?

RE: you ******* need to start watching baseball
Baseball is very popular in most major league cities. I lived in Kansas City and, even when the Royals were bad, they still had pretty good fan support.

Mike Greenberg asked Selig a few days ago whether baseball had become a "regional" game, rather than a national one. Selig all but acknowledged that there was merit to that idea, although he still tried to say that it had national appeal. As a Royals fan, I follow that team. I could care less what the Rangers or the Padres are doing. I think that is the way most fans are, they support their team and don't worry about the rest.

Other sports are different, the NFL, NBA ... it seems there is more interest outside of "your team". I think it is because there is more star power in those sports. Who is the biggest star in baseball? It should be Mike Trout, he's like 22 years old and the best player in the game, but if we walked into a grocery store in Memphis, no one would probably recognize him.

What's wrong with baseball?

1. Most pro athletes (MLB, NHL, NBA) loafed 15 years ago. Other sports have fixed this except baseball. Today players making $10 million a year still refuse to run out ground balls.

2. The Yankees $238 million payroll competes against the Astros $21 million payroll for the same trophy

3. The idiot commissioner spent most of his tenure not giving a **** about PED's.

4. Game are too long

The game would look drastically different if A. Bartlett Giamatti hadn't died. When you hire a piece of **** used car salesman to run the league, what do you expect?

Speaking for myself, I expect more from the highlights. How many towering drives out of the park and collisions in the outfield can we watch before they all look the same?

NBA players today don't loaf? News to me. Hell, half the regular season players go through the motions.

The NBA STILL doesn't give an ish about PED's. They don't test for HGH? Ever wonder why Lebron looks the way he does? Hmmm.

The payrolls are what they are. MLB STILL has had a more diverse group of champions than any other major sport.

Since 2000 (number of different franchises to win title)
MLB:9 (doesn't include this season, of course)
NFL:9
NBA:6 (only 8 since 1984)

Longer games? They are no longer nine innings? The 2013 season average was 12 minutes longer than the 1987 season average, or about 40 seconds longer per half inning.

Part of it is that there are, on average, two more strikeouts per game, a 35% increase from the 80's. More strikeouts=more pitches. More pitches=more time.

Also blame dikwads like LaRussa who go to the pen for every dadgum lefty-righty matchup from the 7th inning on. That's the real timesuck.

Another thing wrong with baseball? Unless you are a Yankees or Red Sox fan don't even bother watching ESPN.

Seems kind of obvious to everyone that they loaf a lot less. I'm glad I could be the one to let you in on the big secret.

1958 - 1995
39 years
NBA teams averaged at least 101.4 ppg EVERY single season

1996-2014
19 years
NBA teams NEVER averaged at least 101.4 ppg per season

Quote:Longer games?

Is this a question? If it is, why do you give reasons why the games ARE longer and still ask the question? You seem to know the answer; if you don't; guess, it's not that hard. Thanks for the nice list of reasons, but seriously; who gives a ****?

In any event; good for you that you acknowledge what every single human being on the planet agrees with...namely that baseball games are too long.

Quote:MLB STILL has had a more diverse group of champions than any other major sport.

Playoff Droughts
MLB
4 - 10+ years
9 - 5+ years

NFL
4 - 10+ years
8 - 5+ years

NBA
1 - 10+ years
3 - 5+ years

NHL
0 - 10+ years
4 - 5+ years

Finalists Since 2000
17 NFL
17 NHL (includes lockout season, no champ)
15 MLB
12 NBA

Champions Since 2000
10 NFL
9 NHL
9 MLB
6 NBA

I guess a three way tie = MORE than any other major sport. That assumes that your info is correct. The NFL has had 10 champions since 2000; so your info is (unfortunately) not correct.

as a fan why should I care about PEDs?

If they want to juice themselves up for our enjoyment, more power to em..

The players union should have been front and center trying to get PEDs banned and testing in place ...

the owners 'forced' players to do PEDs due to the ignorance of the union.

I agree. Run that graph over the same time frame showing average attendance or tv deal money. It's be up for sure.

Rob Refsnyder. He's tearing up AAA and knocking on the door for a call up to the Yankees. Ironically, he played A ball in Charleston after saying he would never go to SC b/c of that incident.

I should know that. I live part of the year in Tucson, lol... But why isn't MLB marketing minor league players more? Compare the drafts, I don't know any player drafted in the MLB, nor do I know how to gauge whether they will or should become a star in the big leagues. I have at least an inkling of all three of these things for NBA and NFL. I know that the minor leagues is often treated as free marketing for MLB, but I don't know if that's as effective as it could be.

To those that think it's "dead," I disagree. Sure, in a fragmented consumer society it will never recover the dominant position, but we've witnessed the effect that video games and fantasy sports leagues can have on sports popularity among the youth. Soccer is more popular than ever these days, mainly because of FIFA 20XX. Football and NBA too. Fantasy sports have opened a new reason to watch football, and have done well in raising awareness for baseball too.

I guess I compare what it is with what it could be, and it's tough for me to watch. And once I've gotten away from it, I haven't felt I've missed much.
