2014 Football season
We have less than 2 months until we kick off our 2nd season and I am getting pumped. I am looking forward to seeing how our team has grown and gotten better after a year in the weight room, and looking back on their 1st season together. We have a challenging schedule with some quality FCS teams mixed with a few "cupcakes."

Here is my game by game predictions:

8-28-14 at Campbell
Last year we dominated from start to finish and I expect the same this season. They may put up more of a fight being at home on a Thursday night, but this is must win.

9-6-14 JCSU
Home opener vs a D2 school that shares the same town. They will come out ready to prove something, but our talent level should prevail.

9-13-14 at NCCU
The Eagles gave us our 1st dose of reality last season blowing us out at home 40-13. They have a new coach and an incoming transfer at QB. We will make this game closer than last year but I think the Eagles beat us again in their house.

9-20-14 at Elon
They had a poor season last year and fired their coach. Their QB is a returning SR and their program has had some success in the past. I think the 9ers take a close one on the road.

9-27-14 Charleston Southern
CSU had their best season in decades last season and beat the 9ers. The game was close until a few pivotal plays allowed the Bucs to pull away in the 4th. They were a very young team and I imagine they return most of their starters. They snuck up on people with their triple option last year, and it probably won't be as successful as last year. This is a 50/50 game in my opinion, so I will go with the 9ers.

10-4-14 at Gardner-Webb
By far the best game at Jerry Richardson Stadium last season as the ranked Bulldogs pulled out to a big lead on the 9ers, but allowed them to come back. The Niners won it on a defensive stand on a 2 point conversion. GW will be looking for revenge at home so I expect this to a be another close game. Another 50/50 game IMO, so I will lean with the Bulldogs since it is on the road.

10-11-14 at The Citadel
Back to Back road weeks vs a quality team from the SoCon. I don't really know much about this team except they lost to CSU on a FG last year. Another tough road game and I will say the Niners come up short.

10-25-14 James Madison
They dominated us last year in the rain 34-7. Their coach got fired and they hired a former assistant from Chapel Hill. It was clear they had more talent and experience than us last season and I think that the gap has been closed a bit in talent, but we still will lack the experience. I will give the nod to JMU.

11-8-14 Coastal Carolina
Top 10 FCS team last season doubled up the Niners last year 50-25. Their QB returns and I expect they are still a better team in 2014. CCU wins this one.

11-15-14 Wesley College
Embarrassing home loss to a veteran Wesley team last season. I expect the Niners to win this by at least 2 TDs this year.

11-22-14 Morehead State
The Niners dominated MSU in Kentucky last year 61-17. I expect to see the back-ups get some action in the final game of the season for the 49ers.

So I expect a 6-5 or 7-4 season depending on a few 50/50 games.

Campbell will be closer than last year. Our talent level is higher but the whole redshirt/build for 2015 will not have us put our best team out there yet. Expect the other games to fall about where you have them. Good analysis.

RE: 2014 Football season
I could be happy with 7-4. I'm very interested to see how we fare against the teams that we played last year. I'm thinking that the added experience and depth will pay dividends. Depth should help in an area like special teams. We were gashed at times on special teams last year. The Coastal Carolina game comes to mind. It seemed like they started nearly every possession out across the fifty.

Good point. The quality of our special teams players should go up. We replaced walk-ons with scholarship players now on that unit. Many of which red-shirted last season.

You'd also think that Minter would have a better squad together a year later. I noticed that Campbell travels to App the very next game. I'm sure that there won't be any comparisons made...

Very true. But ODU fans aren't nearly as concerned with us.

RE: 2014 Football season
I think we can get NCCU this year, that game...just when the turnovers started the flood gates opened. After the embarrassment last year and with our guys having another year of experience and maturing, I'd give us a slight nod in that one. It will be a great early season barometer on where we are (probably won't be able to tell much from Campbell and JCSU).

I really hope somehow we can pull a 9-2 out of this season, but there are some really good FCS teams on the schedule. I think we lose at The Citadel and to CCU, and although JMU is probably a little more talented at this stage than us, it will be the biggest game of the year...so hopefully the emotion can carry us through.

There are still so many question marks, we could end up anywhere from 5-6 to 9-2. Hopefully it will be the latter 04-cheers

RE: 2014 Football season
If the team doesn't open at 2-0, we will have had some serious early season injuries or have overestimated the talent on the roster.

NCCU and Elon - I'll go with 1-1 on these road games. Probably lose at NCCU.

Charleston Southern - Niners lose a close game.

at GWU - Win.

The Citadel, JMU, Coastal Carolina - L, L, L. (Might have chance vs. The Citadel, rosters of JMU & CCU still have too much talent on their rosters)

Wesley - Win.

Morehead State - unless Phil Simms finds some eligibility, we win comfortably.

6-5

Well l appreciate you asking. Most UNCC fans do not seem to care. These days I spend most of my time living along the Florida coast, recording informericials for my very successful flash card coaching system. I also am a charter member of the Florida Southern Hall of Fame and make many appearances on their behalf

That's good to hear, Hal. Did I ever tell you that I know a guy that holds you responsible for ruining his college years?

03-zzz03-zzz03-zzz I've heard that complaint over 10,000 times. The school barely had 10,000 students when I coached at UNCC. Go check the local court records from 1991...or maybe it was 1990. The courts agreed I am not responsible for ruining anyone's college years

I don't want to derail the thread anymore than we already have. I wouldn't blame you for his bad experience. I don't think he had many friends. You do have to admit that you really did suck though.

what you meant to say.

Moving back on the subject of 2014 football.

- Which game on the schedule could stand to be the most impressive victory of 2014?

- Which game on the schedule could stand to be the most difficult loss of 2014?

most impressive victory - Coastal Carolina.
most difficult loss - JC Smith.

In my opinion, Coastal has had more recent success than other teams on the schedule.

Could be tossup between Smith and Wesley on the loss side, but I will go with Smith because of the local school connection.

No, I had it right the first time, Hal.

As for football, I'd love to see us beat JMU. Coastal would be next on my list. I'd also love to see us take one from Central.

We better not lose to JCSU. I wouldn't consider it a terrible loss, but I'm expecting us to have Gardner Webb's full attention this time.

Must win Games: JCSU, Campbell, Wesley, Morehead State

Games that I would be very surprised to win: Coastal, JMU

50/50 games: NCCU, Gardner-Webb, The Citadel, Elon, Charloeston Southern

Most winnable? I would probably say Elon. They have a new coach and are rebuilding.

I would rank the 5 games as far as "most winnable.":

1. Elon
2. G-W
3. CSU
4. The Citadel
5. NCCU

Might swap #3 and #4. But your order is pretty close to accurate.
