Being a power conference
What does everyone feel it would take for this conference to be considered a power conference and do you feel that will happen

More fans and higher TV ratings. Everything else will fall into place if we get those (doing pretty well in the other categories as it is).

pre-bcs it was reputation, in the old bcs system it was a formula on how you finished , in the playoff system it is based around fans and a major bowls willingness ti sign with you

in 2 months it could be the autonomy divide

It probably cant happen--and if it does happen it would require decades. Basically, average attendance for the entire conference must climb to around 40-50K per game. Additionally, we would need two or 3 schools averaging between 60-70K (those would be your anchor schools). Do that, and we would become a lower level power conference regardless of performance. The reality is its all about about fanbase size. With large fanbases, recruiting becomes stronger, TV deals are better, higher ticket sales increases revenue, and larger crowds attract better bowls. Its attendance, attendance, attendance. Oh yeah, and attendance is important.

As Delany told Maryland when they questioned whether they could fill their stadium like Ohio State, Michigan... "It's about eyes on the tv".

The AAC needs TV ratings. The money will follow.

Attendance can set the atmosphere for the game, but if the ratings aren't there....

It's a shell game. Being "deserving" has nothing to do with it. Nevertheless, in just year one we have proven that the AAC is a RELEVANT National conference.

We are talking about terms like "G5", "P5", "BCS", "Non-BCS", that change every few years.

Who knows what will happen in 5 years, let alone decades from now.

I will say that I like our group of schools. Being anchored with two schools in Texas and Florida will serve us well. The enrollment figures for the Florida schools speaks to the potential at work in the AAC.

RE: Being a power conference
The only way the AAC will be a power conference is if the P5 form a new division and set the rules for those that want to join...I believe the AAC schools (most of them) have the resources, fan base, facilities, etc. to be able to pony up and join. That is where the Cusa's, sunbelts, mac's, etc are going to drop off. So if the AAC does pony up (i think we will) we will then be a power conference at that point since we will be part of the P5 post separation.

i dont think ratings really matter, cause at the end of the day, espn can dictate their ratings. if they for some reason got on the AAC band wagon and start touting us and saying we are great and we have heisman players, the ratings will come.

the money will come depending on our significance in the game (how big are we in respect to all of college football)
the big east got ridiculous amounts of money because the brand of "the big east" is a staple in college basketball not because they thought seton hall and depaul could get good ratings

i also dont think attendance is that important, though it is big and can be used as a measuring tool and vaidation..it has more to do with impact on the market you are located in and size of the fanbase you have even those not attending

Wait... There's something new to be added to this?

Or do you just want to hear, over and over and over again, what you want to hear, with nobody to challenge it?

I fill it is important for all the fans in this conference to support each other as much as possible. To turn on the tv sets and watch all the games that have an aac team playing in them. It helps to have the tv exposure we have to put up high ratings.

The truth of the matter is that this really is a subject that's been beaten to death and probably has all good answers and no good answers.
