RE: What would the best eastern all sports conference look like?
I much prefer a Mid-Atlantic regional conference:

Rutgers
Maryland
Pittsburgh
Penn State
West Virginia
Virginia
Virginia Tech
North Carolina
North Carolina State

*Geographically compact public universities
*Nine schools max.
*Football-- all schools play each other annually.
*Basketball--all schools play each other twice annually.
*Potential for some great rivalries

RE: What would the best eastern all sports conference look like?
If you really mean all sports you need to look at the Director's cup standings over several years: http://www.nacda.com/directorscup/nacda-...oring.html

If eastern means a team in a State that is considered to be on the East Coast (includes Pa) then using last years Director Cup standings here are the best eastern all sports schools (Not Including the Ivy League)

2 - Florida
4 - Va
5 - Penn State
9 - Duke
12 - FSU
14 - UNC
16 - Georgia
32 - MD
35 - South Carolina
37 - VT
41 - NC State
53 - Syracuse

That's 12. But this is if you really mean all sports.

Others in the east:

44 - Princeton
49 - Harvard
57 - UConn
60 - Clemson
64 - Miami
65 - BC
70 - WF
85 - Pitt
89 - GT
90 - Navy
91 - Rutgers

Sometimes WVa is put in the east:

69 - West Va

I don't think folks really mean all-sports - I think they probably mean Football, Basketball, Baseball, Lacrosse, Swimming, Tennis, Wrestling, Golf, etc.

I don't know that they really mean to include Rowing, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Equestrian, etc.

But good luck teasing that out. I also don't think they really mean women when they think "all sports", but I could be wrong however some schools really clean up in the women's events.

By eastern, I thought you meant north eastern. So that would have to include Penn State and a round robin basket ball schedule for all the great basketball programs up there. So 9 or 10 teams.

BC
UConn
Cuse
Temple
Maryland
Pitt
WVU
Ohio State
Cincy
Louisville

That would kick ass from a basketball perspective.

For the East Coast, you'd need a big ass conference. 20 teams. 10 conference games with no permanent partners. 4 in division games and 2 in each other division.

North
-----
BC
Cuse
Penn State
Pitt
WVU

West
-----
Maryland
Louisville
Notre Dame
Virginia
Virginia Tech

East
-----
UNC
Duke
NCST
Clemson
USC-e

South
-----
UGA
GT
FSU
Florida
Miami

RE: What would the best eastern all sports conference look like?
This question really needs some more parameters, so I'll suggest these:
1) 10 teams
2) North of NC and East of IN
3) Can't take teams which were already in the Big Ten as of 1980 (i.e. no Ohio State).
__________

1. Boston College
2. U Conn
3. Syracuse
4. Temple
5. Penn State
6. Pittsburgh
7. W. Virginia
8. Rutgers
9. Maryland
10. Va Tech

RE: What would the best eastern all sports conference look like?
Let's say 14 is the magic number for said conference:
Boston College
UConn
Syracuse
Rutgers
Penn State
Pitt
WVU
Maryland
Louisville
Cincinnati
Miami
Virginia Tech
Florida State
Georgia Tech

South Division is Georgia Tech, Miami, Florida State, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Louisville and Cincinnati (yea a bit of an odd fit)
North Division is Boston College, UConn, Cuse, Rutgers, Pitt, Penn State, Maryland
Other than a gap in the Carolinas it covers the whole Eastern seaboard plus two of the "close cousins" of the former Eastern and Southern Independents that are further inland.

If 16 was the magic number you could throw in South Carolina and East Carolina to round things out and send Cincinnati to the North Division. Or maybe you go to 4 divisions. BC, UConn, Cuse, Rutgers in the northeastern. Pitt, Penn State, Maryland and WVU in the mid-Atlantic. Virginia Tech, Louisville, Cincinnati, ECU in the piedmont. And Miami, Florida State, Georgia Tech and South Carolina in the southeastern.

Looks like a merger of Big East and ACC with Penn State. Could have been a wicked conference in all sports. Add South Carolina and Memphis and You had Most former Metro schools back together. Almost like the proposed Super conference.

The same is true of UConn and Rutgers blows at everything. I thought the point was an "all sports" conference.

RE: What would the best eastern all sports conference look like?
You might as well reform the old Southern Conference (MD, UNC, UVa, VT, NC State, Clemson, SC, UGA, GT, TN, Vandy, Ole Miss, MSU, Bama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Duke, Wake, Tulane, Kentucky, and WVU, and add current ACC/SEC partners Miami, FSU, TAMU, Mizzou, Arkansas, Pitt, Syracuse, BC, and ND, and Penn State as number 32. Then split into divisions of 8.

Nope. UConn is strong in both men's and women's basketball, same for Rutgers except they are also good in football. Not really a big Syracuse hater but everybody has them in there best all sports conference but they reall only excel in men's bball.

Three national championships this academic year would suggest otherwise for UConn.
