Overcoming “Special Snowflake Syndrome” as a Millennial
Quote:I thought I was off the hook, but it turned out I was the worst offender of all. Here are 5 things I’ve learned since that realization.
Generation Y are not bad people. For the most part, we’re educated, open-minded, accepting of others, and confident. But unfortunately, many of us are affected by a condition known as “Special Snowflake Syndrome”.
Special Snowflake Syndrome: The belief that one is a proverbial “unique and special snowflake”. Symptoms include inflated self-importance and an unfailing sense of entitlement. Those with exposure to excessive coddling in childhood are at especially high risk.
Quote:1. Human relationships are not about finding people who are willing to coddle you.
Quote:2. You are wrong a lot of the time. You do not know everything. Accept those facts.
Quote:
3. Doing a favor for someone does not necessarily merit anything in return.
Quote:4. You are not the center of the universe.
Quote:5. Nor are you the most interesting person in the world.
Quote:As painful as it is to admit, I believe all of us are struggling with a little bit of special snowflake inside us. And I don’t blame us, either. After all, the most primitive human instinct is to survive, and now that humans are no longer getting chased by sabertooth tigers or starving to death for lack of brawn, maybe that instinct manifests itself in the form of a blown-up ego and mindless greed. I don’t know for sure.
What I do know is that honestly evaluating the place of narcissism and selfishness in our lives can help us start to weed it out. And I think that’s a very worthy cause.

The "special snowflake" syndrome is a major problem.
You'd be shocked at the number of people who ask questions and then assume they'll be part of a 1% outcome; you know, because they are different. It's pervasive in my generation.
It's the result of parents telling their kids they were geniuses and always special while never once telling them the truth.

Seems like every generation is worse that that which came before it.
It wasn’t until a few years ago during my grandfathers military funeral that
featured WWII vet guards of honor that I realized that I am of a pitiful generation.

I wonder if it's worse in small families. For one thing, there's more wealth to go around. And it's hard to think that you amount to jack squat when you have bigger brothers and sisters keeping you in your place and basically insulting the hell out of you and all the other siblings.

The problem is simply that conservatives tend to get business and engineering degrees, while liberals get educations in child development, child education and journalism.

I suppose I'd be labelled a liberal as well, but my degree was in business.

Hey, don't make fun of a juco education. It's the highest level some people can manage.
I'm not. In the other thread I wished him luck in finishing his education.

Sample of 776 college students. All majors had 30 or more respondents, except for Foreign Language which had 4, Humanities which had 12, Economics which had 22, and Government which had 12.
