Report: Alabama, Cincinnati Discussing Future Football Games

Alabama has reportedly been searching high and low for opponents to add to their 2015 and 2016 football schedules, and now they may have found one.

Tom Groeschen of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported today that the Cincinnati Bearcats have had discussions with Alabama about playing some future football games.

Alabama is currently scheduled to open the 2015 season in Arlington against the Wisconsin Badgers. If the Tide were to play a “Nippert opener” in 2015, it would have to be the 2nd or 3rd week of the season.

But that doesn’t seem likely because it would leave Alabama with only six home games that season. Most SEC schools prefer to play seven homes games to rake in the additional revenue.

On the other side, Cincinnati already has four non-conference games set for 2015. In order to play Alabama in 2015, they would have to postpone or cancel one of those games.

In 2015, the Bearcats are slated to host Alabama A&M (Sept. 5) and Miami, FL (Oct. 3) and travel to Miami, OH (Sept. 19) and BYU (Oct. 24).

Cincinnati is scheduled to host BYU and Miami (OH) and travel to Purdue in 2016.

Alabama’s only other non-conference games currently scheduled are ULM (Sept. 26, 2015), Western Kentucky (Sept. 10, 2016), and Colorado State (2017).

Chances are that, if UC gets on Alabama's schedule for 2015, it will be IN TUSCALOOSA, meaning that if a "Home-Home" deal is struck with the Tide, the return trip to Nippert would be at some time in the future... Which, I would be dollars-for-donuts, Alabama either (a) buys out, or (b) converts to a "Neutral Site" game.

I'm sure UC understands that possibility and will negotiate a very high buyout in the contract to prevent or at least mitigate it. Alabama has limited leverage in this particular situation that they found themselves in.

Lord knows we can use the gate and the exposure.

Just be careful what you wish for.
An a$$ kicking in our newly renovated Nippert would suck.

The top of the SEC plays at a whole different level.

Expectations are in our favor. We've got little to lose and a lot to gain. Worst case scenario we get our butts kicked like Arkansas (52-0), UK (48-7), TN (45-10). Ole Miss (25-0) VA Tech (35-10) or even LSU (38-17) and those are all just from last year. If it happens to us too, oh well we're in decent company. Best case - hey let's find out...

Well - yeah - except for UK 03-lmfao

UC could play at Alabama in 2016 with the Tide coming here in 2017. If that was the case UC would still need a 2015 game at Nippert against someone stronger than Alabama A&M. I also hoping UC works the basketball program into some of these deals as well.

The good news is that UC is trying to create a schedule that looks like a team that play in a power five conference, hopefully the Cats have the team to hang with the big boys. Ohio State, Miami Fl, Michigan, Nebraska, Boise State, and BYU are on the docket already, can't wait to see who else is added to schedule. In some ways we have said goodbye to our former regional Big East foes in WVU, Louisville, and Pitt and hello to a national schedule. Conference realignment has pretty much done that to everyone.

plus this.....

Equals a Sept 5, 2015 Nippert Opening vs UK

I think they are trying with Alabama but that may be pie in the sky and this seems more likely. We shall see.

Kentucky has room on the schedule. Would they play UC? Fan interest for that game would be strong, easy travel on both sides.

Sure hope the first game of the home-and-home is in Cincinnati. If not, the only Tide you will see in Cincinnati is coming from P&G. Too often the return game is bought out.

Now that UC is no longer in the Big East For some unknown reason UC has a really difficult time scheduling home & home with regional rivals such as UK, Indiana, OSU, WVU, Pitt and Northwestern. Purdue has been the only P5 regional team that has played UC on any consistent basis. It's time for UC to have a what ever it takes attitude to get some of these games even if it's 2for 1. Something has to give. I have always said that if UC had a Big 10 or an ACC, Big 12 schedule Nippert or PBS would be packed

You're so right about that. The cash always helps on those deals but UC needs quality non-conference home games to continue building toward the P5.

Regarding the comments about Kentucky, last I heard they have no interest in playing UC in football or basketball. I remember UC beating them in Nippert--they do too I'm sure. They're already losing to regional rival Louisville annually and don't need to take another annual beating in what they consider their home turf for football recruiting.

They had those same problems when they were in the Big East. UC has done home and homes with Purdue, Illinois, Oregon State, NC State, and Oklahoma. Future deals include Boise State, Miami Fl and BYU. We probably need to stop thinking about regional games and start thinking national. If Louisville, Kentucky, Indiana, and WVU want to play UC that would be great but those are not the only schools I would be looking at.

In a lot of ways games against Ohio State, Michigan, Miami Fl, Boise State, BYU, and Nebraska are more exciting than playing WVU, Syracuse, Rutgers, or Pitt. The American's east division will provide solid games yearly against UCF, USF, ECU, and UConn. UC has done pretty well against college football's second tier but it is time to start knocking off a few name brand programs.

Agree, but take Ohio State off the list. If they don't give us a home-home, they don't count in my eyes.

RE: UC in talks with Alabama for Home & Home - possible Nippert Opener
Gotta give Ono and Bohn credit for trying to raise the perception of UC football. Playing a team we can easily beat at the Nippert opening does nothing for the program - and probably not be a sellout. An Alabama -type opponent guarantees a sellout - they may even get close to 40k with SRO. 03-cloud9

Imagine the media buzz if Alabama or another top SEC school comes north - that never happens. It certainly raises the perception that UC is a top program worthy of playint top teams. Might even get ESPN Gameday here! 04-rock

Being Keil's second season at QB and another year in CTT's system, I believe UC would put forth a good game and make it competitive - at least as well as any other mid-level SEC team.

We'll also still be very well stocked at WR, but I will have huge concerns with the OL by next year (this year's should be pretty good).

Right up until we lose by 35

And I don't get the whole "we won't sell out a mid-level opponent" argument, did you guy miss the fact that we set a record attendance against a team that finished 1-11 last year?

Yeah, I'm of the opinion that the first game in the new Nippert will be an easy sellout - and might command some decent 2nd market ticket prices.

With that said, you can't turn down Alabama if that's the scenario that ultimately plays out. Even if we lost by 35, it'd be worth the extra publicity/energy IMO.

Agreed. I know I won't miss it (unless they schedule to game on a Friday night).

I agree that we probably would sell out against a mid-level opponent. My personal opinion is Bama would be great. Play a team, who is currently one of the top couple of programs in CFB. You do not get better by playing low level teams. With our conf we need a strong OOC as well.

As for Purdue, no one knew they would be 1-11. Also, Purdue is a B10 school. For some reason people in Cincy and the State of Ohio have an over inflated view of those schools.
