Arrogant ILL-ini writer
Another example of the self-righteous arrogance of people connected to the ILL-ness.

http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/prep-...-call.html

What this clown doesn't understand is that there are kids now dreaming of being a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. The idea that the IHSA had the economic common sense to see if hosting championships elsewhere could be better for ticket sales, atmosphere, and the fans is lost on this idiot.

I don't think any of that is actually lost on Asmussen; he writes for a Champaign newspaper, so he wrote an article the locals would find favorable. I don't find that terribly surprising, he knows his audience.

I expect it to get far worse once Thanksgiving weekend comes. DeKalb needs to impress. Is Huskie Stadium and the area actually able to handle this?

The facilities for the players are outstanding with the Yordon and CPC, but impressing the media is a different story. I expect there to be a lot of complaining about the press box.
Anyone know how many media members are usually up there during the championship games?

"Anybody who says they prefer the finals at NIU is lying."

I suppose all those HS coaches who petitioned the finals be held at NIU were fibbing. The majority of football finalists are from the northern part of the star, so the geography of NIU makes the most sense. The finals at DeKalb last fall were a huge success. Loud crowds and fewer empty seats. And the media who complain about NIU's press box can screw themselves. Hopefully the IHSA will continue to not listen to them, and keep the finals in DeKalb.

I don't consider it arrogance. Arrogance is in reference to those that have achieved some level of success like when people refer to the arrogance of Yankee fans, or Buckeye fans. With this Illini writer its bitterness and jealously, or some would term it "***** envy". Illinois is 3rd in the hierarchy of success in the college football world right now, or some would claim 4th, as EIU probably even had a better team than Illinois last year. Its a tough pill to swallow for sure.

I don't recall reading about too many complaints in Daily Herald or other suburban papers, so I believe it went well.

The writer went to Nebraska, I highly doubt he cares whether Illinois is 1st, 3rd, 4th, 8th, or 30th in the state. Illinois fans don't even really care, they just want to not be terrible anymore.

There are football players in the state who dream about stepping onto the field where Dick Butkus once scared running backs.

Where Red Grange toasted Michigan.

Where Howard Griffith ran for eight touchdowns.

i guarantee you, ask any high school player if they ever heard of any of these three and they would give you a blank look. What he doesn't talk about is how they gouge you on room rates down there.

Not sure kids today know any of those names.

Unless the high school player is 95 years old, Red Grange probably doesn't enchant him.

Hotel gouging is also how they lost the basketball tournament to Peoria.

I know who Red Grange, but I have no idea who Howard Griffin is. That's not really the point, though. Kids don't aspire to be like players from those days, they think about peole who play right now - Tom Brady, Adrian Peterson, Vernon Davis.

Unless they went to WWS or played in the DVC. The WWS field is named after Grange.

Typical. The Illness think they are Harvard or Yale academically and equal to Michigan and Alabama in athletics. Irrelevant is more like it lately.

DeKalb is a better location for most of the teams that have played in title games in the previous 10 years with the exception of East St Louis, Bloomington, Bloomington Central Catholic or Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin. East St Louis and Springfield are a substantial distance to Champaign also.

Have not been to the state hoops finals in Peoria but it's closer to metro Chicago than Champaign and the Peoria region is a hoops hotbed, they deserve a tournament. My brother in law has coached girls jr high and HS hoops the past 25 years and he believes Bloomington has done a fine job hosting the women's tournament. Bloomington is a fine centralized location as well, not far from Chicago and within 2 hours of Champaign, Danville, Peoria, Springfield & Decatur.

RE: Arrogant ILL-ini writer
Champaign residents and the rest of Illinois south of I-80 does not want to admit or understand that there would be no University of Illinois without the $ and enrollment of those who live north of I80.

There are 12 public universities in Illinois and despite 75% of the state's population residing north of I-80, 7 of those 12 are in either western, central or southern Illinois. That's a huge transfer of $ from northern Illinois to the rest of the state. If those either north or south of I-80 ever chose to leave the state of Illinois, the University of Illinois, Illinois State & Western Illinois would certainly close within 2 decades and possibly Eastern Illinois University as well.

Neither Northern Illinois University, Governors State University, UIC, Chicago State nor Northeastern Illinois University would be affected by a population split.

I heard nothing but positives about the games being held at NIU. In fact, I spoke to a guy a couple days ago that said he was a high school football ref...and he was really impressed with NIU's Yordon & the IPF. he had nothing but positives to say about the games being held at NIU.

It seems like the writer is just bitter that things have not been going well in Champbana recently.

It's pretty simple, really... Anything south of I-80 might as well be Arkansas. People don't want to drive to Arkansas to watch their championship game be played...better facilities or not...

When is Illinois going to realize that they are just Purdue on steroids?
