Very few places have two starting caliber QB's on their roster. There is usually a prospect waiting in the wings who has yet to prove himself. Sometimes they rise to the occasion, sometimes they don't. You won't know until they are thrown into the fire. It is on the staff to work and develop that back up QB to be ready when the time comes. After hearing Withers speak in Richmond, I have complete faith that they will have a second QB ready to go by the first game. This staff has their game face on and are ready to bring this program back to where it belongs.

Is he taking us to FBS?

In time, I believe so. Honestly, I am over the conference speculation. It's either going to happen or it won't. I am going to just enjoy what we have and stop focusing on something I cannot control.

I agree with NYJMU. The public statements make this point rather clear. Let's win a national championship where we are now and move when the right opportunity comes our way.

I too am done discussing conference affiliation. It is a mute point. Until there is additional movement within the ranks of FBS, we will be a CAA school. No reason to speculate about anything.

Looks like MU is happy to have him, crazy considering he's nothing but a quitter....

Very interesting comments about the lack of true competition for the job under Withers, I have been told that was true but I wasn't really buying it (and I'm still not sure that I am). Withers has made it very clear twice in person that EVERY job is open for competition, and he's bringing in more QBs to compete for the job.

Also interesting the note about MM influencing the decision to choose MU. Hadn't really seen anything mentioned along those lines previously, but don't we also have former MM staff at MU?

Hope MB enjoys the QB competition at Marshall. He is not a Duke anymore so who cares.

I wish Birdsong the best. He was definitely a big proponent of JMU and was a solid QB. I hope he gets a chance to start for Marshall eventually, but a lot can change between now and the fall of 2015 when he is first eligible to play. I have a suspicion though that he'll be holding a clipboard more often than playing for the Herd.

Coach price recruited MB out of HS. And it's wasn't a competition , VL was a starter from day one. And it's looks like Withers is bringing on a couple of quitters that we would love to have as Dukes. Lol

The whole quitting thing is a bit hypocritical ....either that or the board would be full of self described quitters who won't acknowledge they are quitters. No one who has called MB a quitter has ever left a job for a better opportunity? An opportunity where their skills would be allowed to showcase or a least were a better fit? No one has ever job hopped because they had a tyrannical, difficult or dufus boss? No one has ever decided the grass is probably greener elsewhere because a new boss was hired and they brought their right-hand man with them? Maybe you were being groomed, or already had that position, but the new boss has other ideas. For every argument about someone not wanting to compete, I could come up with equally compelling arguments why a true competitor could not allow himself to be subordinate when they truly felt they could lead.

Agree with this. Wish Birdsong well and move on. Things change. Let's move forward.

Hotrod is right, it was not an open competion. When Coach Withers is running offensive plays with the first string guys on the first day of Spring practice and calls Lee to get under center while the former starting qb watches, it becomes pretty apparent it was Lee's job to lose as opposed to a true open competition.

I wish Birdsong well, I believe he gave everthing he had for us on the playing field.

Lee was brought in to be the starter. It wasn't a competition because Lee was the best fit for the O.

I'm ok with it. I'm glad MB gets a chance at FBS, because he won't get that here. I'm glad Lee is here, because he is a difference maker.

HZ:

Good apr for your program. Is your argument that academically, Marshall is superior to JMU? Instead of looking at the football apr, look at the schools overall academic ranking. If your football players attend less challenging classes it would stand to reason that their apr would be higher. As we learn with football, there is more to statistics than just a number.

Birdsong is a good kid and would be a good addition to the Herd. You don't have to be an ass and post stupid crap to get attention.
