Does Anyone Know What Delany Is Talking About?
On BTN Delany gave an interview yesterday where he said:

“…we have other things we want to do but I think by July1 it will be crystal clear we are committed to competing and becoming relevant to this part of the country …” And there have been other announcements about news in the next 60 days.

I would assume, based on the Big East arrangment, they are planning for the conference basketball tournament to be in NYC. That would be starting in 2018 I am assuming?

Maybe this - basketball tournament in Washington, D.C. starting in 2017?

"We don't just want to visit here, we want to live here," Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said of the Northeast. "This was our first opportunity to do that. We think it's a wonderful opportunity for not just Maryland, but for expatriate Big Ten fans living on the East Coast to see great basketball in March."

I'm more confused that either he or the writer of the article called DC the 'northeast'.

How is DC not in the North East?

It is on the East coast and its not in the South East.

The B1G BB tourney will be in Washington, DC for one year per an announcement yesterday that included Indy or Chicago would be the location of the other B1G tourneys during the next 5 years. Therefore, I do not think the announcement will be about a NY tourney, but who knows.

Unfortunately, you may have not be able to avoid getting your hopes up for a B1G invite. I doubt it, but it is possible. Good luck and I hope you get some good news.

DC is Mid-Atlantic by geography, but Northeastern by association.

How about Mid-Atlantic? I think that is a legitimate designation at this point for the the the areas that are not fully the South and not fully the North.

This. Unless you are the type of person that thinks that everything must be black or white, then DC is certainly not in the northeast. DC is about as 'north' as St Louis is.

But that is already announced. He (and others around BTN) keep saying July 1st is the day it is clear that they are serious about competing in the Northeast.

July 1st is also the day that Rutgers and Maryland join, but again, that is already announced. I am just going to assume they are going to announce a far off basketball tournament at MSG (which was the exchange for the Big East/Big 10 matchups).

Personally, I consider D.C. as part of the Northeast Megalopolis (Boston, New York, Philly, Baltimore, D.C.).

Based on how Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers joined the Big 10, I have serious doubts that this big announcement involves adding a member in any capacity. It would have leaked by now.

I understand the temptation to lump DC in with the other larger cities, but if I were to ask someone where they lived and they said 'Up in the northeast in DC', I'd look at them like they had 2 heads. I guess that's where my viewpoint comes from.

I think Mid-Atlantic is the best way to describe DC and Baltimore. It's just as much of a region as the Midwest.

We only know for sure that the writer of the article did ... in the quoted statement, Delany says "East Coast".

Delany could well have said "the Northeast Corridor", which is explicitly Boston to DC, with the reporter shortening it to "the Northeast".

While many people in DC tend to have a similar mindset to those from the Northeast, geographically speaking - DC is Mid-Atlantic.

If that's your criteria, New York isn't in the Northeast...

This is why "Northeast Corridor" or "East Coast" get you in less trouble if what you are trying to say is the big urban markets on the East Coast from DC through to Boston.

After all, the only geography that Delany really cares about is the geography of money.

I consider Mid-Atlantic to be the region starting just south of New England and down through the Northern parts of Virginia and does include New York. FWIW, the Census Bureau's definition of Mid-Atlantic is New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

You obviously aren't from the Northeast.

Northeast = New England + New York (and maybe NJ).
