Shields post of 4-22-14
April 22, 2014

We are now in our fourth week of conditioning with Director of Athletic Performance John Barron. I’m very encouraged by our mindset and work ethic to this point. I think we’ve had a great three weeks. The last day we’ll be able to work out is April 28. The rule is your last workout can be one week prior to the start of finals, and our finals start the following week.

John Barron and I are really encouraged by what we’ve seen from the guys in the weight room. It’s been a great start to the spring.

We have had a few injuries that have prevented all our guys from going. Stetson Billings has been in a boot with an injured foot. Kemy Osse is still recovering from his knee surgery. Maurius Hill injured a ligament in his wrist in our Sun Belt Tournament game against Arkansas State and is currently in a brace. J.T. Thomas has been limited with what he can do because of the injury suffered early in the season.

J.T. and his parents have chosen not to have surgery. He will be going through six weeks of physical therapy which we believe will get him to the point where he can play.

I’d also like to say how excited I am about the signing of Roger Woods, who joins us from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. I think he brings something to the table that our team needs. He’s a strong, physical player who is very good with the basketball and can get to the foul line extremely well. He was First Team All-Region last year and averaged 19 points and seven rebounds per game. Along with the three players we signed in the fall and the guys we have returning, I’m very excited with where we are.

I was under the impression that J.T. had a sports hernia. If I'm correct, I don't know how you rehab that without surgery. Maybe I'm confused as to what his injury is. Coach is still mentioning Kemy. We're two over the limit as things now stand. Who's not coming back. Coach also mentions the three signed in the Fall, so they are obviously still coming. So who goes? Poulter hasn't been mentioned in awhile, so he's an obvious candidate, but who's the other one? The numbers just don't add up right now.04-cheers

Coach Shields is on Wes Moore's radio show on 93.3fm right now. Guess you could call and ask and listen to him talk around it

They have to keep talking the talk until the ax falls.

Didn't mention Mareik, on the radio, when talking about returning players (he primarily talked about the returning starters). Didn't mention others, as well, so it likely means nothing. He already used a redshirt year, so I can't really see him transferring. He is definitely one I don't want to lose.

I would hate to see Mariek leave. He's one I was really counting on this year.04-cheers

What are you drinking Isolater? Mo is the 1st one you would keep, followed by James and Josh

Cutting Mo would be the only reason I would give up on the program. Mo is the best player with the most potential on this team, in my opinion.

I'm just asking, I feel the same way, I think Mareik upside is huge, And I have heard that he works really hard on his game. Let's hope he is not one they let go.

There is no one to cut that wasn't a contributor. Either someone has grade problems or is leaving on their own or our staff is insane to cut known contributors for jucos.

Why would anyone think this kid is leaving?

He has burnt his red shirt and would have to sit out plus lose a year. He is going to start or be 6th man next year and play as many minutes as his fouls allow him.

Only one I can think of who wasn't much of a contributor. The others were until they suffered injuries. I would suspect there is a grade casualty or someone leaving for personal reasons, or we wouldn't have oversigned.01-lauramac2

If it's a grade casualty, then we might be able to guess who it might be, and I don't think anyone wants to lose this guy. Hopefully that's not the problem.
