Political compromise was still possible because elected officials on both sides of the aisle had to consider the interests and wishes of all their constituents, not just the most extreme or polarized ones.
I agree with all of that. I don't see how it connects with your earlier point about Nixon and the Southern Dems.
From the 1920s to the 1960s (and even for a long time after that), Southern Dems -- who were by far more "racist" and "reactionary" than Trent Lott (for example) ever was -- coexisted with liberals in the Democrats' national party. Beginning in the 1960s, they were willing to coexist with liberals in the Republicans' national party (Jacob Javits, Clifford Case, Thomas Kuchel, George Romney, etc.), too.
It's interesting that you singled out Trent Lott as a counterpoint to southern Democrats. Lott was on the very cusp of the transition of the south from Democrat to Republican. He began his political career as administrative assistant to one of the more conservative Democrats in the House. When his mentor retired and endorsed Lott to succeed him, Lott chose to run as a Republican rather than as a Democrat.

Yep...we didn't even have a black astronaut in 1965. (first was June of 67)
We didn't have a black President, in fact we still have never had one, the US shouldn't exist.
Don't you worry...between Obama and Hillary my generation will fix those issues.
I think they've fixed them pretty good already.
Heck, I was an 11th grader wanting out of h.s. I told my mom I wanted out and she said, "fine, you'll have to start working." That did it for me I stayed in school, I figured I'd have a lot of years to work so why start so soon.
As for political leanings, there weren't any. All I remember was my dad telling me to vote democrat when I became of age because as he said it, "they take care of the poor people." Yep, they sure do by making them pay for insurance that they can't afford if they're lucky to be working.

Between them there is 1.5 white people and .5 black. You like your racial equality your way don't you?
I'm not worried about his genetics...in a few generations we'll have a little of everything in us.

I hate to agree with him, but it was worth mentioning. This is something that would've directly had impact on all of our political leanings back then, especially the non-white posters.
A lot of the Southern Republicans we have now would've been Southern Democrats of the 60s. The racial issues would've had a significant impact on their leanings as well.
At the end of the day, the title of the thread should've discouraged me from clicking on it.

No it wasn't.
It was a silly post that was meant to bring a smile and a laugh. Besides, what I didn't post is that in 1965 I would have worked at an anti-racism NGO arranging Freedom Riders and voter registration drives for blacks in the deep south. So there.

All true, and the bolded part is precisely why I named him as the example.

If it was 65', I would have beat up a bunch of times. lol
As where I grew up in the 70's and 80's I had many black friends, black teammates (baseball and football), black friends at school, a bunch of black friends in the Army, dated many black girls (80's-90's) and now that I am single again I will be on the lookout for them again. As a matter of fact I have done more for race relations than 99.999999999% of white libs.
If someone wants a good feel good story, from the 60's, google Ivan Allen Jr.
Edit, I got my nickname on here from a black friend in junior high, he always thought I was Super Fly

Stand down, outrage brigade.
You realize you are the one who brought racism into the thread, right? And that none of the other posts prior to yours could be interpreted in any way, shape or form as supporting segregation or demeaning the civil rights struggle, correct?
Just puzzling about the disparity between what had been posted, your demand to insert racism into the thread, and then uncharitably characterize the discussion.

LS,
The fundamental danger of leftist is that they believe that human beings, when properly governed, can create a heaven on earth. Becuase of this *any* perfection of a prior age invalidates the entire age.
Forget that the 1960's was a tremendous time of scientific growth and of great prosperity for many. We have to ignore that... In 30 years the leftist your children will face will say the same of this era.
Because they beleive they can make perfection, if only they had the power, they never think they government has enough power.

Alright, I'll play.
Just like we have people against gay marriage, more than a few posters would be anti-interracial marriage. We'd alsohave a good number totally against integration.

Nope. Gas was only 18-22 cents a gallon in 1972, so I'm guessing it was less in 65. Gas didn't cross 30 cents until the OPEC oil embargo. At that price you didn't care if your 383 / 427 cubic inch engine drank it down. Go fast!!!
Hey, I'm a '79 model, what can I say...
When I graduated in the late 90's, it was $0.79 a gallon... I could have filled my tank up for $17.38... Now that only gets me to an eighth. Ugh

As the Watergate morass closed in on President Nixon, he told some of his staff (late '73 or early '74) "I can survive anything political, but I can't survive 40 cents for a gallon of gas."
What I'd give, for 40 cents a gallon now.
It's kind of like putting on a few pounds and thinking you're fat, then seeing that picture 20 years later wishing you were JUST that fat again.
I flipped out with gas hit $2.00. I'd give anything to pay $44.00 to fill my truck up again.

Hippy women were stronger than hippy men, my term, "biitches" refers to the men... I would never lay a violent hand on a woman...
