Doubt it. It was the we must get three SEC teams in deal. No way on earth they were let only 2 SEC teams make the field. It is all about money and power. Vols lost TWICE to aTm.
Precisely, the 'outrage' would have been huge....bottom line is that the $EC is a bad conference, but it IS a 'Big 5 conference' and with 14 teams at that. There is simply NO WAY that Committee would EVER take only 2 out of 14 team power conference....no way. Even if the $EC deserved it, the Committee was in 'face saving' mode all the way.

This was pretty shocking to me. Were they even considered on the bubble? I recall pretty much everyone had them as a lock, with the Houston loss dropping their seed a couple lines.

Agree.
They got in due to a late season upset of Syracuse- and they also beat Pitt and Tennessee.
They lost to NC Central 98 (but a tourney team)
113 Wake Forest
110 Miami at home
SMU had one bad loss- and other than Syracuse for NCState, more good wins as hey knocked off UConn twice and Memphis.

They are a 1 seed in the NIT.
Play UC Irvine
Arkansas LSU Cal in their region.

Ya'll got screwed but I guess there was no way they were going to have 5 AAC teams in the Dance.
I'm not that upset with SMU, I'm pissed seeding for you, UCONN and Cincinnati
Thanks for your empathy. Memphis I felt was seeded properly. Louisville screwed. SMU WAS TOTALLY SCREWED.
Complete disregard by the committee of the AAC. Now we know their formula. Your OOC schedule cost you dearly. They stated their sole reasoning for excluding you was due to your OOC strength of schedule was 300+ and your overall strength of schedule was 129, compared to the lowest of 91 for any other NCAA team they accepted.
What use is the strength of schedule without considering the wins and losses produced by it? I'd be interested in the stat pros around here to compare your SoS they mentioned as reasoning to exclude yours alongside with your RPI and KenPom rating compared to some of the schools that got in.
So many teams that got in that wouldn't be able to even sniff SMU's farts on the court.
The funny thing is SMU is likely a preseason Top 10 team next year unanimously picked to win the AAC. Basically the same team returning.
Hope you win the NIT SMU!!!

At first I thought that SMU got screwed, but it makes sense after I read more into it. SMU had a weak non conference schedule with their best win at being plus 100 rpi. Also, Memphis is lucky to get in because when I was watching the selection show, I was biting my nails when they havent announced Memphis until the last bracket.

Smu got screwed when they took nc st over them...we were getting in and I wasn't even worried...us not getting in would have been the biggest shaft in modern NCAA history.

I was shocked and disgusted. And yeah, they put 3 teams from the same conference in our bracket. Bad, bad, bad.
SMU, just go out and win the NIT. Everyone knows you got screwed. Your players and your coach.

RE: Feel bad for SMU
To me it looks like all that mattered this year was how you did against 50-150, which is ridiculous. Also, it seems that criteria was not applied across the board.
We've got to schedule better in that area next year, it killed our SOS. It's a head scratcher why that would be weighted so heavily since it can be so easily manipulated, but how you did against the 96th, 97th, or 120th team seemed awfully important in the seeding process this year.....for some.

I found that rather odd that they had gotten down to the last bracket and it started raining AAC schools.
Some people think SMU is still on the death penalty.

Because the big conferences know 95% of the time, their teams are going to be in that range, so they created it and push it. Some teams set schedules to work the system and get a top 25 seed. See VCU who didn't beat anyone out of conference except for Virgina the first game of the season and the only other ranked team they beat was St. Louis at home. But they didn't have what some would consider 'patsies'. Not when you play Fordham, Winthrop, Long Beach St, Old Dimion, Wafford, Stoney Brook, George Mason, Duquesne, La Salle, Richmond, St. Bonaventure.
This joke of a schedule isn't deserving of a 5 seed. Except to a corrupt selection process.

I totally agree, SMU would have made noise in the tournament. It was gonna be hard for them to put 5 teams from our conference in the tournament without people recognizing how good our conference was. So they just put 3 of our teams in the same bracket, shafted Louisville, and eliminated SMU. Problem solved.
