Want to see Toledo as an NCAA at-large someday?
Then we should join the A-10. SIX of their teams are in, and they've had multiple bids for awhile now. The key? It's a mid-major conference that focuses on basketball--not football. So: which is more important to you? Having a real shot at being an at large selection every year in the NCAA or hoping for a spot in an ESPN-sponsored mini bowl game? Discuss. And "both" is not an option for this exercise.

Or not lose to a $hit team like O-13 U, in OT, on the road, with an over inflated attendance number.

You may have missed my point. Playing an A-10 conference schedule obviously trumps whatever those teams do OOC. Just getting to 20 wins seems like enough for the A-10 teams. Much greater respect for the quality of basketball there than when compared to the MAC by the powers that be.

Obviously, Toledo needs to schedule the A-10 schools and beat them. What a dissapointment Toledo was not selected. Yeah, I know win the MAC tournament. I can't imagine how confusing this is to the players and coaches. I sure can't figure out the formula.

I will be interested in the WMU run, but I am totally uninterested in the remainder of the tournament.

Rockets didn't deserve it. Lost to too many mediocre teams down the stretch. Just not enough of solid interior game on offense and defense.

Keep in mind, UMass is in the A10 and this is their first bid since 1998.

Counting the tournament, half of Toledo's conference games (10/20) were against teams in the RPI top 100. That's plenty of opportunity to build a resume. Unfortunately for Toledo they were just 6-4 in those games and didn't sweep any of the top 100 teams that they played more than once.

I was hoping Toledo would have got a bid as well. Looks like you're returning a good team. The MAC should be as strong or stronger next year, put some more tough but winnable games in the OOC and the Rockets will have a real chance of getting an at large.

They either won't play MAC schools, or will only play us at their place. Very difficult to schedule "real" OOC teams, just ask OU's AD.

lets be real here.......toledo would have to do like boise or wichita state to get an at large bid....and then they'd have to play their first three games of the season against acc schools and win

meanwhile michigan state could win 15 games and get in with no problem which is bull

It's bull crap, that's what that is. It's as if we (MAC schools) literally don't have a chance to succeed unless we go undefeated in a sport.

Is their an at-large team in the NCAA that isn't better than Western Michigan? Just asking. I'm too lazy to check, but I doubt it.

Ask Mike O. some time how difficult it is to get "real" OOC teams to come to Toledo to play. These schools have nothing to gain by playing at Toledo, OU, Akron, et. (Why hasn't Dayton recently scheduled games any with MAC schools?) They don't want to risk a bad loss by playing at a MAC school. It's not fair, but it's reality, and yes, we have to nearly go undefeated to get recognized. When did we get a lot of exposure………..earlier in the year when we were undefeated. Once we lost a couple of road games, we fell off the national radar.

One could argue that the only guaranteed way to play, say, A-10 schools regularly would be to be in that conference. It does pose an interesting question: would a current MAC school be better off playing for a 50/50 shot every year of making basketball's national championship tournament as an at large, or staying in the MAC to play football as a FBS school ( who knows how much longer) and the ocassional trip to something like the Boca Bowl or that crazy one they're starting in Alabama?

Well with everything going on in college football lately, the lower conferences seem to be getting the shaft. It's not looking good so your idea is actually a pretty intriguing idea. I don't know how I feel about it...

RE: Want to see Toledo as an NCAA at-large someday?
there's too much invested in football for this to happen.

toledo would have had a real shot at ncaas if they played better down the stretch. offensive flow was inconsistent late season and the team didn't earn the bid. league had little to do with it, smu had the same thing happen to them.

ncaa will continue to undervalue "lower conf" teams that's an old story. look at n. carolina central they lost at maryland at whicita st and at cincy, won at nc state and were like 27-1 vs everyone else. they got a 15 seed.

I think we are down a path that will be hard to change. MAC does have its draw backs but UT FB had control of its own destiny and could not close the deal. Hoops had the same opportunity and suffered the same fate. I always think we need a better conference (no chance of that ) but then when you look at other examples like Green Bay and SMU in the same boat.
Our players need to know that the margin for error in the MAC is razor thin...it is "just win baby" or hope for the best.

RE: Want to see Toledo as an NCAA at-large someday?
Truthfully, I dont want to see UT as an at-large. That means we ended the season not holding the trophy in the MAC.

As a fan, I want championships. Knowing that UT isn't Kansas or Duke, our shot at a Natl Title are quite low at the moment unless we develop the program to Memphis or Gonzaga pedigrees. So if we're going to make the tourney and eventually lose--- I want a trophy to at least show something for the season.

Maybe its just me.

Not just those schools. An article in the Blade last week said that freaking Wright State wouldn't give us a home and home.

In sports as in life you are judged by who you are associated with. Once again (I know broken record) Toledo's affiliation with the MAC has hurt the school. One and done league has killed Toledo for years. Granted I want championships and tropies like ChiTown says. But I also want our sports teams playing at the highest Division possible (FBS/BCS).....

It's not wins and losses, it's are you a MAC member, or are you in a respected conference.....

The NCAA needs to mandate some home and away requirements. This truly is a disparity issue in all sense of the word.

NCAA where are you? 01-lauramac2
