RE: Is SMU now on the bubble?
SMU should be easily in the tournament and they will be in the same bracket with Kansas. They have just had a hangover since Russ went off on them last week.

They were more then likely a #10. This probably dropped them to a #12. They are in. and I feel sorry for the #5 seed that has to play them.

My prediction no matter even if the bracket projections keep them out of Dayton.... SMU makes it but has an extra game in Dayton on Tuesday.

Smu has been my favorite team to watch in the AAC this year (basketball). They are in and should get a decent seed.

Zero chance that Larry Brown and the no. 25 ranked Mustangs get completely booted out of the NCAA tournament because of this loss.

RE: Is SMU now on the bubble?
I think we need to see what happens this week before declaring the Mustangs in the tournament. The winner of Providence-St. John's plays Seton Hall for a chance to be in the finals of the Big East tournament. That puts a possible bid stealer in the championship game. The C-USA associate AD might get two C-USA teams in if La Tech or Southern Miss make it to the final.
We still have Belmont, Green Bay, and possibly Toledo coming out of the blue to take a bid. Every season there is a team in the tournament that comes from a mid-major league. Right now Toledo has more top 100 wins than SMU does and Belmont has better road wins, North Carolina and MTSU. Thats how the committee justifies a screwy pick or two.
At the end of the day I think the Mustangs are in but right now that probably at best a 10 or 11.

No. But at the same time, I think that it would take an absolutely absurd amount of upsets for SMU to not make the tournament (e.g. lots of multi-bid conferences have their tournaments won by teams on the bubble or ones that would not have made the tournament otherwise).
All things considered, I'd put the probability of SMU being in the tournament at 99.5%
I'll stand by my earlier prediction. The loss to Houston certainly didn't help the Stangs cause but I think SMU will make it as a #11/12 unless there are a ton of upsets in conference tournaments this week.

RE: Is SMU now on the bubble?
I think it comes down to two things:
1- "At large" bids always have to worry about crazy things happening in lower conference tournaments and unexpected teams grabbing bids, thus forcing 1-bid conferences to become 2-bid conferences...
and...
2- Someone other than UC, UL, Memphis, or UConn winning the AAC tournament. Because I really do think the American is, at best, a 5-bid conference. If Houston or Rutgers rolls up the tournament bid, then SMU is probably on the outside, looking in.

Don't think SMU needs to worry about Rutgers winning the auto bid. UL up 52-16 currently.

RE: Is SMU now on the bubble?
No team ranked in the final coaches Top 25 before Selection Sunday has ever been snubbed.
In 1999, New Mexico was 74 in the RPI, but 25th in the coaches poll. They got an at-large bid.
SMU's RPI just dropped to 53 with the loss. They are probably in simply because the coaches think they had a Top 25 season, and the committee is not going to override the coaches.
That said, the 1999 New Mexico team made the MWC finals. A quarterfinal loss will put this "coaches poll ranking" factor to the ultimate test.
