Piers would be unbearable whether he was a Brit, from the US or from Antarctica. He comes across as a pompous arse and that just does not fly in this country. The most liked people on television have pleasant personalities... regardless of political ideology.

I love the Brit Top Gear guys, but could never get into the American version. Those guys just aren't funny.
