Free Throws and 3 Point Shooting
We played well in all other facets of the game. A couple more threes and 65% free throw shooting and it's an easy win.

Our defense from the backcourt was non existent. Our free throw shooting from our backcourt was horrible. If our bigs were missing all of the free throws it wouldn't be as big a deal. But it is our guards who are missing them. Supposedly the "top backcourt in the nation".

RE: Free Throws and 3 Point Shooting
Our guards played HORRIBLE defense. One thing I hate is seeing a guy get beat so he can try and swipe at the ball from behind...which happened a lot tonight. The other thing, that I don't understand at all, that happened a lot tonight was our guards giving up the baseline for drives. How many times did we see Temple run the baseline and catch a cutter right down the middle?

Don't put all the blame of ft shooting on the guards. Austin and Shaq both missed front ends of one and one.

First half we played good defense second half we slacked up, lost focus and played sloppy lazy defense

Even worst is that they were playing off the player and not tight on them and still gets beaten off dribble.

I wouldn't care if he went 2-38 if he gave better defensive effort

These last two games are wins but it sets a pattern that could be turn ugly for the next two weeks. We could not have a bye in the league tourney if this continues.

RE: Free Throws and 3 Point Shooting
I thought looking at the AAC standings we clinched a 1st round bye last night with 10 wins. Looks like the bottom half will be fighting it out for the 6th spot.

We defend the three better than everyone in the conference.

You mean if Memphis does not win another game and finishes 10-8, they could fall to 7th place- even behind the current team in 7th which can do not better than 8-10 if they win out?

This is a bit of a panic post since Memphis has statistically clinched a bye- and in fact- can finish no worse than 5th place- and could still win the conference regular season title- although will need some help on that.

Memphis is 2d in conference holding opponents to 30% from three.

Starting with last night's game and going backwards...Memphis opponents shot from three:

35%
20%
43%
23%
12%
26%
33%
21%
30%
14%
25%

One of them was Gonzaga, one of the best three point teams in the country- and they shot the 12%.

I get the idea of bashing our team after a close game- but just maybe pick something else or limit the bashing to the idea that in the second half only- Temple was hot from three?

Free Throws and 3 Point Shooting
To me it wasn't that they were a great shooting team but had a lot of open looks. We didn't play off screens well at all last night...and our hands were down on D a lot on the perimeter.

RE: Free Throws and 3 Point Shooting
Open looks is the same thing as uncontested.

If a shot is uncontested- it is open. Unless this is now a dance that is trying to get to some point that Memphis was not hustling enough leaving guys uncontested while if our kids would just hustle they would contest shots even leaving some open?

I am agreeing with you that in the second half last night Temple had some open looks.

I am disagreeing that our kids have allowed a lot of open threes though- especially considering we have one of the best three point defense percentages in the nation and 2d in the conference.
