Why can't this team "get up" for bad teams?
I guess you can definitely lump us into the "bad team" category at this point, but why can a team that has 3 wins better than our best win from last year consistently lose to such terrible teams?
Will this trend carry over to next year?
What is the reason behind this trend?
This is the most disappointing season of basketball since I started being a UAB fan. Totally inexcusable and I really don't understand what's going on. I'm completely baffled.

The basketball team could lose every single game for the rest of the season, and none of it would hurt as bad as 62-27.
IMO, that was the worst day in the history of UAB football.

Sweet. I didn't realize this was a UAB Football thread, but now that I see it is...I'm excited.

RE: Why can't this team "get up" for bad teams?
Back on topic. Our seniors have not been winning games at a high clip at Uab. They all seem like nice guys and good representatives of the school, but they are all flawed players. I'm not trying to knock these guys, but we all need to remember what Haase is working with.
I don't know anything about the team but if I had to guess mine would be there is some sort of rift between chad and at least one of the seniors. Again, pure speculation, but it doesn't seem like we have a true leader on this team who is respected by the entire team.

My speculation is about respect. It is based off of actions I have seen on the court. Pure speculation, but just a gut feel.

RE: Why can't this team "get up" for bad teams?
Most seem to be mystified by the peaks and valleys of this year's team, and are trying to find a sensible explanation. We ask why a team can beat UNC early, USM later with solid competitive efforts and then turn around and seemingly forget what it takes to win a game against what should be a relatively weak opponent.
Maybe we just have a team of streaky players who have not internalized the winning process and play on how they "feel" that day. When they are "up", they play like world beaters. When not "up", they play like world road kill. If that is the case, we can only hope they are "up" for the tournament.

So we are losing to lesser teams over and over because all our guys are on the same page?

Something is obviously amiss, Memphis. If you don't want to acknowledge it or talk about please leave the thread.
There's obviously a motivation or chemistry issue with this team.mwhere it's stemming from is beyond me. WTF is going on? This has to be one of the most disappointing UAB teams ever. Its certainly the most disappointing one since I've been a fan (which is 10 years starting this season coincidentally). We've had no major injuries, no deaths or major events in players or coaches lives, and no catastrophic events during the season. So why does this team consistently lose to inferior teams? When we simply play like we give a damn, all of our deficiencies don't seem to matter that much, at least against crappy teams.

Who says I am not acknowledging it. I just don't think coming up with imagined rifts and calling out specific players with no proof whatsoever is productive. There is no evidence of a rift or lack of chemistry between the players.
It is simply a group of players lacking confidence in themselves. When CJ came out and hit those three 3's against USM, it boosted everyone's confidence and everyone played well. When Tulane came out and couldn't miss, the entire team panicked and and didn't get composed until toward the end of the game, but by then it was too late.
There is a lack of focus on the team. Probably because of the accolades of beating NC earlier, they believe they can mail it in against inferior teams. There is also a lack of seasoning on the road, because of the genius schedule to give us two dozen home games against bad teams.
There is also a new coach who is still learning how to motivate players, probably the toughest thing to learn.

To your point MB, I'd rather us take the Danny Manning approach to scheduling next year--I hope our OOC schedule is Top 50.

We already know how to beat good teams.

RE: Why can't this team "get up" for bad teams?
Our bi-polar basketball team just seems to expect to beat the bad teams without giving maximum effort. There were numerous times in the first half when Tulane had unmolested shots at the basket, both inside and outside. No attempt was made to alter the shot. If not for Chad's 18 1st half points, UAB would have been in record-setting territory for 1st half futility(Rucker had 0 pts and 0 rebounds in the 1st half). Offensively, other than Chad, no attempts were made to drive the basketball. Tulane even managed to maintain their lead when the reserves came into the game. There was a total lack of effort in the 1st half by UAB. This team cannot just turn it on when they want to. With this team it takes sustained effort and that's something that is lacking against "lesser" teams...
Oh, and UAB has got to do better at the FT line - we missed 15 free throws last night, including, numerous times, the front end of one-and-ones...

RE: Why can't this team "get up" for bad teams?
One the jobs of the coaching staff is to motivate the team to win. This team has not been motivated to win against teams we should beat. Everyone here wants to defend Haase as a coach who's learning. He's 3/4 of the way through his second season as a head coach. His learning time should be about up.
