Who'd we pick up in 12 that Baylor screwed over?
Also, reading between the lines, Art Briles does NOT come out of this looking very good.

07Owl beat me to it.
DJ Green who was a teammate of Destri White, Jorian Clark, and Andrew Morris. And Baylor still managed to flip Andrew Morris from Rice.

Point 14, the HS coaches advice to recruits, is pretty solid.

Very interesting article. So interesting, in fact, that my first thought upon reading it was, "No way this type of story would ever be written and published by the Houston Chronicle." DMN continues to be the best daily in Texas, especially with respect to sports pages.

May be true, but this is the FWST

I never had an opinion of the FWST before, but now it's definitely above the Chronicle in my mind.

Several schools could fit that bill, but given that these are DFW coaches, then I would say Mesquite Horn. We have three players from that school. Had Andre Anderson and Lovett Gibson stayed at Rice, then Cedar Hill would also qualify (Driphus Jackson).
Locally, it seems that Cinco Ranch and Cy Fair have contributed multiple commits to Rice. And then there is San Antonio...

I suspect one could safely form that opinion without even having heard of the FWST. The Houston Chronicle is its own indictment.

The FWST is the home of legendary sportswriters Blackie Sherrod and Dan Jenkins, as well as the semi-legendary Randy Galloway (who claimed to be a Rice math major). On its bad days it is known as The Startlegram.

SMU and its recruiting efforts come off particularly badly in this piece. Six years into June Jones' $20M, ten-year contract, and one has to label the big money move as a failure. June Jones improved performance ever so slightly at SMU, but he really hasn't achieved much. Jones has a few 7-5 seasons against weak schedules, but SMU looks to be regressing now. Like Rice, SMU's location means recruiting should not be difficult, but June Jones seems to be failing at this too.

But who can forget June Jones' first game as head coach, when he traveled to Houston and played on ESPN. The whole country was riveted! It wasn't clear from the broadcast who the opponent was, or what the result of the game was, but June Jones was the coach. What a great story -- the start of an era!

Excellent article. It is right on especially the recommendations if your son wants to play college football.

Again since the big boosters pay June's salary (as they do Larry Brown's) the Ponies do get something from it. Of course the flip side is that almost everyone but those big boosters wanted Jones gone two years ago.

Oh yeah, man do I remember watching that game on tv. It was ridiculous how they almost never even said the words "Rice Owls" through most of the game. Might as well have been the June Jones Talk show instead of and SMU-Rice football game. Showed we have a loooong way to go to improve our public perception in FB (I won't even talk about mhoops right now). Will have to string together several very successful years to get some sniffs. At least this past season is hopefully finally a start. Look forward to hearing about spring ball. BTW, when do practices begin?

Has Jones ever been known for his recruiting? He's really an NFL guy who retired to Hawaii and had massive success at it...

I'm pretty sure Galloway was at the DaMN News, not FWST. I found this byline from 25 years ago, ironically, about signing day...

Blackie Sherrod never wrote for the FWST, according to this - http://archive.apsportseditors.org/feb20...ngton.html
In his work with four Texas newspapers, from the Temple Daily Telegram near his native Belton, to the Fort Worth Press, Dallas Times-Herald and, finally, The News, Sherrod mentored some of the best in the business.
I remember his Times-Herald columns, where he wrote for many years.

Randy Galloway just retired from the FWST after switching from the DMN about 15 years ago. He still occasionally has a piece on a prn basis.
