Stetson on the boards
Over the last four games he has had 10 rebounds in 44 minutes of PT. Not bad for a SF.

Stetson is showing signs of improvement. He might be a player yet if he works on the areas he needs to work on. Mainly shooting from someplace other than at the basket.04-cheers

RE: Stetson on the boards
If Stetson could just get consistent on the two-foot shot, he could be a big help. Amazing how many times D1 players blow that shot.

RE: Stetson on the boards
Stetson's defense or rebounding isn't being questioned by me, but he came here with a reputation for scoring, and he hasn't shown any sign of that.

None at all. Well, not quite absolutely none. 1.6 ppg.

In all fairness, it looks as if it's not his role, unless he can get to the basket, but he's usually looking to get the ball to Will or one of the guards. Next year he'll probably be given a lot more freedom to shoot. I think Steve does a good job of teaching players their roles and insists they play that role. Stetson is probably doing what he's being coached to do at this point. That will be something we could ask Steve at the luncheon, which by the way could be affected by the weather. Looks like Tuesday might be the worst day of the week, weather wise, but it looks allright for Wednesday and Thursday's games. Let's hope.04-cheers

I do not know how to evaluate defensive players very well, but every comment I have heard from the staff indicates they have been pleased with Stetson's work in that regard. As to his scoring, I do not think he ever will be a big scorer, but he does not have to be. There are a lot of points to be had on layups, put-backs and FTs. Certainly as many points as Leroy is getting this year. Stetson is doing exactly what a young player ought to do: listen, work hard, know your role, and wait for your opportunity.

RE: Stetson on the boards
Stetson is averaging 1.6 rpg on 8.4 minutes/game. If you factor that out to Leroy's 25.2 minutes/game, then Stetson would be averaging 4.8 rebounds/game. That is a very good number for a small forward. Give me that one the boards, lockdown defense, and whatever junk points he can pick up, and I would be very happy.

And he's shooting 80% from the free throw line, which is outstanding. Plus he's only taken one three pointer all season. That's sort of surprising since I'm pretty sure he shot some in high school but he seems to pass them up when he has one. He's either been told not to take the shot, or he's not confident enough to do it and tries to get the ball to someone who will shoot it.04-cheers

RE: Stetson on the boards
Really, I think the coaching staff is doing a great job of bringing Stetson along, and the great thing is that he seems to be listening to them. I figure they were very candid about what they wanted him to do, and offense - at least at this point - was not part of it. "Play defense and rebound, and you will get PT. Go out there and try to be a shooter, and you won't." So he is listening, and he is playing.

I think you're absolutely right. But I don't like a player being told not to shoot. At least if you're open for a good shot, any college player should be able to shoot the ball reasonably well. He's proven he is a very good free throw shooter, so if he can flash into the lane, he should be able to make some fifteen foot field goals.04-cheers

Well, those were my words, Doc, not the staff's. I doubt they put it quite that way.

RE: Stetson on the boards
But just imagine if Stetson were to get to the point that he was getting 6 rebounds a game. Think how much pressure that would take off the 4 and 5 spots. I don't think we have ever had anyone do that. Fowler had 5.6 his senior year.

And don't forget we have some guards who are pretty darn good rebounders. Josh is oustanding and Kemy is pretty rugged under the boards also. And if the ball comes out a little further, D'Vonte is usually somewhere around to grab it.04-cheers

Josh is one of the best rebounding guards we have had.

Can't argue with that.04-cheers
