BG upsets OU in Athens, 58-56. Miami beats CMU in Oxford, 86-80, behind some hot shooting (59% from field and 7-14 on treys) on a cold, snowy night.

Akron had 20 point lead at half against EMU...EMU fought back in 2nd half but looks like the Zips will hold on, up by 11 with a couple minutes to play. UT up 11 on NIU with a few minutes left there.

Maybe we should have geared up for Bowling Green instead of making Louis Orr look like Rick F***ing Pitino. Again.

at this point its probably safe to say that many (most?) teams in the MAC aren't as bad as they've looked in their worst loss and aren't as good as they've looked in their best win. this is gearing up to be a weird season.

Toledo sleep walked by niu, who is getting decent on defense but is limited on offense especially w highsmith out. some of these games come down to energy, others match ups. I still think Toledo is the best team in the league, the question is if they stay driven and improve their weaker areas.

EMU too.

As knowledgeable folks say about the zone, esp. the EMU zone which extends further out, if the defensive intensity isn't there and the defenders don't scramble to get the open wings, etc. etc. it is a very vulnerable defense.

Kretzer had four treys I believe in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Murphy yanked players very, very early who didn't have defensive intensity. Not playing good defense is a good way to get into Murphy's dog house. Raven Lee has been in that dog house.

Miami's game Saturday against BG is an important one for us. So far we've won three MAC games against teams which have zero conference wins between them. We've hung tough in losses to Akron and WMU (as well as UMass), a win against a decent Falcons team would help give us some good momentum as we head into the thick of conference play.

Since they moved to the East, they've only finished better than 5th in the division once. It's easy to see why teams don't get "up" to play BG.

Who knows why teams don't perform when they "are supposed to?" there's a whole lot of literature out there on the subject, but does anyone really know what's going through the collective mind of a bunch of late-teenage and early-20 year old kids? your guess is as good as mine!

RE: Men's Basketball Week of Jan 20 - 26
I think it's more common that teams do try hard, but they just don't play well, than it is that they aren't trying and/or "take teams lightly." Every athlete plays better some days than others. Let's face it, there aren't any dominant teams in the MAC this year (excepting maybe Toledo). They are all flawed, and it shouldn't surprise anyone when one of the top 9 teams beat each other. Last year's Akron team and Ohio team would crush this year's version of themselves. The drop off is obvious. Add in that several other teams are better, and you have a lot of very competitive games in conference this year.

Any MAC team seriously takes another team lightly and what you have is a stupid team and/or a stupid coach. It's inexcusable, and somebody is not paying attention. But I think that is not very common. I think that there is less a gap among teams.

BG regularly embarrasses Ohio, so there's no excuse.
