If those are accurate they don't seem too bad. Somebody must have been recruiting for UC.

To show how weird these rankings are......I think Dantonio's first
2 Classes were in the 80's. CBJ might have had a class ranked as
high as #49, but CBJ and BK's classes were pretty much from the
#50's to #80's depending on the service, Scout Rivals etc.
Rivals had our 2007 class at #90.

Prunty is doing a really good job for UC. We are ahead of 18-20 P5 programs and the only G5 school with a better ranking is USF. (averaging out the 3
main services, 247, Scout and Rivals) There should hopefully be some nice surprises that boost class in the next couple of weeks.

Western Michigan is ranked higher at 45. Why does anybody want to play football in Kalamazoo?

I think the overall quality of other offers that many of our commits held was down this year. Doesn't mean they are any worse than previous classes, just feels like there are more 'reaches' in this class. While Butch didn't have any monster recruiting classes, most of the commits we got the last few years generally held other BCS offers.

Their Head Coach (PJ Fleck) has a dynamic personality. He is pretty young but will likely be one of these guys we will read about in a few years making his move up to a bigger, better program*. They finished 1-11 in his first year this year but obviously recruiting this well wil result in a turn around.

* FWIW he was the guy who had his team honor Ben Flick as well.

And 247 has them at #61, go figure. They have 28 players "committed",
which helps their ranking. On paper their class does look good.

He's probably also selling to the kids that they'll have a strong chance to play as a true freshman. That's big for some players, who want to play right away rather than redshirt/sit for 3 years. Also weren't there rumors of Lonnie Johnson having grade issues? Isn't that why Ohio State backed off?

I think many value the quality of the recruit not on stars but on who else is recruiting said athlete. In prior years, particular in the 2nd/3rd years of the BK era and all of the Jones era UC was recruiting kids that had offers from other Big East schools, some B10 schools, ACC, SEC and the B12. Today we are getting a lot of kids whose other offers only come from the Sun-Belt, MAC or C-USA.

Yes that was the rumor on Johnson. It will be interesting to see how many kids W. Michigan will keep in this current group (players flipping at the last minute/players not being academically eligible, etc.).

Dont most recruiting services just determine rankings based on the kids offer sheet?

Evaluation varies depending on the service but the more well known sites determine the rankings based on personal observation, film evaluation and input from scouts. That is why sometimes you see a guy who is a three star recruit with no offers from a P5 school and by the same breath see a guy with two star offers with multipe P5 offers.

That being said, I do believe a player's offer sheet influence the opinions of the scouts. It is no coincdence that a kid goes from being a three star recruit to five or four star recruit overnight because they got an offer from Notre Dame or Alabama.

Not necessarily. I wouldn't say it's a science but most of the good sccouting services watch lots of tape, see these kids at camps, etc. Most of the variability really comes at the 2* and 3* level. For instance, on 247 Odell Spencer is rated 3 stars (84 rating) and has offers from only MAC schools. JJ Pinckney is rated the same (3 stars, 84 rating) and he has offers from Michigan State, Kentucky, Louisville, BC and Indiana). But I would say that when kids get higher profile offers there is a tendency for their rating to jump.

And 247 has them at #61, go figure. They have 28 players "committed",
which helps their ranking. On paper their class does look good.

MAC also allows partial qualifiers. No way Johnson would have committed there if that weren't the case.
