What's stupid is you'll have to have it to fly commercially by 2016...and you can't get it at the courthouses...only from the department of public safety offices (i.e. state troopers)
One way to shorten the lines at the courthouse, I guess.
- certified birth certificate
- Social Security Card
- 2 items to prove your current address
every time you renew

So, this is a reaction to 9/11.
How many terrorist attacks on domestic flights have happened in the 12+ years since without this ****?

RE: Star ID???
They want us all to have a form of identification where they can immediately know everything there is to know about us. This is a step in that direction. I'll be using my passport if I need to fly. I don't need an ID that will soon be telling you information about my family, my blood type, any disease I may have, etc.

RE: Star ID???
I think all Georgians started receiving Star IDs when they renewed last year. I had to take several forms of ID and records to renew.

RE: Star ID???
Since I can fly myself anywhere directly at anytime w/ more legroom & w/ those I know aren't terrorists (or at least feel the same was I do so won't be trying to shiv me to take over the airplane) at basically the same or lower costs than commercial, I'll stick w/ my DL & get a passport if I go out of country!

You realize your passport has way more "tracking" technology in it than a driver's license, right? Passports have RFID tags in them and machine readable biometric data at the bottom of the first page.

You guys realize that the "Star ID" doesn't contain any additional info, right? The whole point of it is that you have to prove your identity beyond the normal requirements. It doesn't have a chip in it, it doesn't contain any biometric information that your regular driver's license doesn't already have. It simply has a little star on it indicating that when you applied, the State of Alabama verified that you were a US Citizen and that you were who you said you were. That is literally the only difference between a "star id" and a regular driver's license. Good grief, there's a boogeyman behind every corner, isn't there?
Honestly, I don't know why the state isn't just making all IDs "star" IDs because this is just going to end up with people going to the wrong place and getting the wrong ID.

RE: Star ID???
I asked about it at the Iowa DMV at my local courthouse yesterday. They had never heard of it and had no idea what I was talking about. That does not bode well for this being implemented. I'll wager it's another governmental failure that gets delayed multiple times.

It's not called Star ID in every state. The federal law/term for it is REAL ID, and Iowa is listed as being in compliance according to Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REAL_ID_Act
But you're right about the failure that gets delayed multiple times part. It was originally supposed to go into effect in 2008, and a lot of states (Alabama did initially) have said they will not comply.

He's not ruining ****. If he can't see where this is headed, that's his problem, and actually mine too. While we are all busy bitching at each other about Trayvon Martin and some Duck Dynasty hick, the government is busy violating out rights. It has been happening for quite some time now, but we're too dumb to realize it as a nation, because what Miley wore at the VMA's was significantly more important than that.
And Mixedup, it isn't the Star ID I'm worried about, it's where we go from there. It's just like the pat down law in New York. I don't so much disagree with the premise of the law, but at what point will they stop? You give these idiots an inch and they're going to take a mile. But your right, I'm sure they mean no harm. These are the same people who told us health care would not be more expensive and we could keep our plans and our doctors. Why wouldn't I trust any of them?

RE: Star ID???
I'm totally on board with being pissed off about the NSA, TSA, etc. I am a paid member of the EFF and the ACLU. I'm the one usually banging the drum about how we should be focused on those issues instead of gay marriage or the "war on christmas" or any other cultural thing that really doesn't affect that much in the grand scheme of things.
But in this case, I don't know what you're getting up in arms about. A REAL ID compliant ID doesn't contain any additional information that your existing driver's license doesn't already have right now in your pocket.
Real ID require data are:
Full legal name,
Signature,
Date of birth,
Gender,
Unique, identifying number,
Principal residence address,
Front-facing photograph of the applicant.
Which of those are new?
What IS different is that now you must provide proof of your citizenship, in addition to proof of your identity. Also, you must provide proof of your residence.
There's no RFID in a star ID, there's no "tracking" technology in it, there's no information about your blood type or what movies you like to watch on Netflix. You literally have to take in 3 additional pieces of paper when you apply or renew it. There IS a barcode and magstripe on the back, but someone has to physically get their hands on it to read it, and even then it only contains the information that is printed on the face of the card.
A passport on the other hand DOES have an RFID chip in it which contains unique identifying data, including all of the data in the passport plus a digital copy of the picture. Most importantly, though, is that it can theoretically be read just by being in close proximity to the holder. Also, the passport database is by it's very definition a national database. There are controversial requirements regarding data sharing when it comes to REAL ID, but states already share data with the feds. The biggest change is that Canadian provinces and Mexican states can now join the program.
I don't get what your problem is. You're using an actual honest to god Federal ID that has tracking technology built into it to protest the new driver's license that you claim is tantamount to a Federal ID with tracking technology.

RE: Star ID???
It's an irritant. Why the hell do I have to go to the courthouse to get this done? Why can't I go to my local DMV? They are going to make sure they account for all of us, and then they are going to cross the line. That's my concern. I believe I had to provide all this **** when I initially got my license, so why am I having to do it again?

Those are all legitimate complaints, but they don't rise to "they're trampling our rights" or "give them an inch and they'll take a mile". Shelby County has a state license examiner in the license office in Pelham, so I won't have to go to the courthouse, so I'll probably get one. If I had to go out of my way, I'd probably just use my passport, which by the way was much bigger pain in the ass to get than this star ID is.

RE: Star ID???
I'm well aware of what a pain in the ass the passport is to get as I recently got one. But, in order for me to leave the country, that was what I needed, so it is what it is. Making me go to the courthouse when I live 2 miles from a DMV office that is never busy is asinine. I just don't trust our government anymore, at any level. I don't really care to comply with requests like this, because I don't believe they are to our benefit in any way.

I agree, but it is not an infringement on your rights. Jumping up and down claiming an infringement of your rights every time the government does something dumb devalues the argument. And maybe you should contact your county representatives and your state representative and senator. They probably don't read BlazerTalk

The actual restriction is that you have to go to an office run by the State Troopers, whereas the old, non Big Brother approved driver's licenses can be renewed anywhere you can get a car tag. Plenty of places other than the courthouse where you can get it renewed.
