Let me state at the beginning, none of this information comes from KenPom.com as Ken Pomeroy doesn't rate nonD-1 teams. This game counts for UAB, but appears to be another exhibition game for Newberry.

In their two previous exhibition games, the Newberry Wolves lost to the College of Charleston 102-87 and lost to Norfolk State 115-95.

In regular season games, they are 8-2.

They are fairly short, with one 6-7 player and one 6-6 player. Their shortest player is Gerald Evans at 5-5.

Attendance-wise, they average 386 at home games and 321 on the road.

#10 Dontray Walker (6-5 190 Jr) averages 15.9 points per game. He is their best 3-pt shooter at a whopping 50.9% (27-53). He is also 77.6% from the foul line. Walker's top two scoring games were 31 and 27 points.

#12 Demarkus Smith (6-0 180 Jr) averages 14.8 points per game. Smith is 80.4% from the foul line and is tied for the most rebounds on the team, even at 6'0".

What I find most interesting about this team is they have not played a game since December 15.

I suspect that it is a case of old fashion amateur athletics. When school is out for the holidays, all school activities suspend, including athletics.

Herb Spencer was fun to watch. When I saw Newberry on the schedule I thought of Herb. Used to play basketball with him at Sportplex.

Fascinating read, honestly.

How many non-Division I games do we get to count towards our record, and isn't it a little weird to be playing a D-II school so late in the season?

Both of them count toward our record. None of them count toward the RPI calculations.

From looking at scores, it appears that most other conferences have started their conference schedules and for some reason, CUSA is starting late. Haase must have wanted to get one more warm up in before CUSA play, and since others are already playing conference games, he had to go out of division.

We have traditionally played a cupcake at home just after the new year and before CUSA play. I guess no one else was available,

UAB hosts Division II Newberry College; Blazers looking to be aggressive defensively, efficient on offense

Meaning a D-I cupcake?

USC did play Howard the other night, incidentally, and I think that was their final nonconference game as well.

I think maybe we should play Samford in Ohio again or maybe better yet Anchorage Alaska.

One thing for sure, our OOC schedule has just about killed any chance of UAB getting an at-large bid if needed.

We have played two top 25 RPI teams and beat one. It hasn't killed it yet. As for as I know, the selection committee hasn't eliminated anyone yet. I think I will wait and see how it plays out.

We are actually beginning conference play when we normally do--but what you're seeing now is teams begin the conference season due to expansion or playing a 18-game round robin schedule. It will be interesting to see what CUSA does next year with 14 teams...do we keep the 16-game schedule and add another mirror opponent, or go full-blown 18 games (not as desirable in my opinion)?

And the D-II games don't factor for or against us, if I understand that correctly.
