or Mike Munchak/james franklin. I'm surprised o'brien would leave penn state so soon. NFL jobs aren't going anywhere and his job security at penn state is solid. He could coach 5 more years at penn state and make the same salary he will in the NFL. His job security in the NFL is about 5 weeks. I guess the brian kelley to the lions rumor should start if coaches are jumping.

The NFL is the ultimate with Coaches...the 32 Jobs in the NFL > then any college job to most coaches...

That's part of the problem - more like "He could coach 5 more years at penn state and make the same salary he will in the NFL in one year".

Even bad NFL coaches are making $3M/yr (O'Brien makes just over $1M/yr). Many NFL coaches pull north of $5M/yr.

Bryant is an NFL coach. That is where he has spent all his time. If that is where his heart is then so be it.

After Temple and Miami, I don't think Al Golden would want another project, at least not until he enjoyed the fruits of his labor at Miami.

RE: Al Golden to Penn State?
Your perspective list of candidates for IF the job comes available will be the former coach at Rutgers, the Tenn Titans HC, and Franklin at Vandy. I don't see the attraction myself, but pretty sure if it were to come open Penn State would be leaning towards Greg Schiano. Why who knows, but pretty sure I read that some where amongst the net.

Golden wanted the PSU job after Temple, but they told him he wasn't ready and wanted him to succeed at a 'major' school like Miami. Of course he wants the PSU job now.

Yeah, I think Golden will go to the PSU job. The question is who does Miami hire? Since they can't spend more than 1.5 mil on a coach, who can they get who's any good?

Dan Mullen I think would at least be on the list of candidates. I was shocked when I looked up his age --- still only 41. No offense to Mississippi State, but it's VERY tough to break the glass ceiling of what one can do there.

Bobby Petrino comes first to mind. But then he's a good option for anyone who's willing to take a coach with a little dirt on them.

When does Jim Tressel's show cause expire?

As long as you're talking about the likes of Petrino and Tressel, Butch Davis ought to be considered for one of these "name" coaching jobs.

Petrino didn't get caught for cheating in football. But you're right about Tressell. He and Davis have both been caught so they're both in the same dirt category.

RE: Al Golden to Penn State?
Petrino would be a good fit at any school just like a poster mentioned, but just like all his past stops BP always forgets about hiring a top notch DC which always comes back and kicks him in the ass. It would be interesting indeed if the Miami job opens up this time around for I think they would be flooded with so many candidates it would be hard to pick a front runner. I do think the salary cap thing they have there or ceiling or what ever you want to call it will keep some away, but you are talking one of the big boys a 5 time champion with a wealth of talent, and weather that alone should bring in some to take a look. Who no one knows, but I am sure a lot of us will speculate and even go out on a limb to state this person or that one before a list is actually calculated.

RE: Al Golden to Penn State?
Golden needn't even apply for the PSU job. And while he's a good coach, the fact that he couldn't ever best PSU while at Temple is the type of stuff a lunatic fan base will have at the very start when/if he doesn't win one people think he ought to have. It doesn't help he was the LB coach on one of PSU's worst seasons back in 2000, and, yes, PSU fans will recall that in all its 20-20 hindsight goodness. Golden's fine where he is...he'll go pro soon anyway.

PSU will get another New Englander. Or, if he wasn't so old, I'd suggest Talley from Villanova. Total class act, that guy, and I suspect Villanova football is just waiting to finalize a move to the Patriot, which is such a smack in the face to what Andy was doing at Villanova the past few seasons.
