RE: All-Time Favorite Memphis Bands
Many may not know but Robert Johnson came very close to becoming the lead guitar for the Rolling Stones. Robert has an incredible collection of guitars and instruments. A lot of them were owned by famous artists. Anybody want to guess what Robert does for a living presently?

Oh, and the Rolling Stones story explains why he played with John Entwhistle for a while, probably met him while the Stones were thinking about things.

I don't know if this intended for local bands or just Memphis bands who made it big.

Elvis
Box Tops
Bar Kays
Isaac Hayes

Plus, the house bands at Stax and American Records were the best in the land. Throw in the Memphis Horns and that accounts for about 100 gold records.

Oh, and the Rolling Stones story explains why he played with John Entwhistle for a while, probably met him while the Stones were thinking about things.

Robert has been rehabbing old stately homes in midtown back to their original glory, with some updated modern amenities of course. As for him playing with John Entwhistle, there would be several connections. Entwhistle, David Gilmore, and Robert all shared a common passion besides music. All have remarkable guitar collections. Collecting was a competition between John and David. David Gilmore reportedly has the most Hendrix guitars, and David also owns Fender Stratocaster #0001.

Although there is some controversy over it due to Seymore Duncan, and whether or not the Fender factory would have made the first production guitar with custom options as the 0001 owned by Gilmore has. Regardless of the controversy over it being 100% authentic it has been examined by an expert, and the neck has a date and Fender employee signature as well as the body is dated and signed by another Fender employee. Also it is said that the first produced Strat was made for Leo Fender, so why would it not have been made special?

Then you must add Johnny Burnette Rock and Roll Trio.

If I had huge chunks of spare change there are some iconic guitars that I would like to have. One is available for $75K, down from $150K several years ago.

Roy Buchanan's "Nancy" telecaster was once for sale for a huge sum. That would probably be the one I would buy, if granted a guitar wish.

Whatever they did together had to be quite a while ago.

Quote:John Entwistle died in hotel room 658 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on 27 June 2002 one day before the scheduled first show of The Who's 2002 US tour. He had gone to bed that night with a stripper/groupie, Alycen Rowse, who woke at 10:00 am to find Entwistle cold and unresponsive. The Clark County medical examiner determined that death was due to a heart attack induced by cocaine

The Gibson Dove owned by Elvis and used in early 70's, became an icon because of the Aloha Special. In 74 Elvis threw it into the crowd and a guy from North Carolina has been in possession of it ever since.

He said he would never sell it, then he offered, rescinded and now is trying to sell it again. It really belongs in Graceland, but since Elvis gave it away I think it's fair game.

Others I'd like to have but will never be for sale, McCartney's Hofner bass, he still plays it 50 years later. Buddy Holly's Fender, you know just those ordinary guitars that only a gozillionaire collector could even think about.

McCartney owns the bass that Bill Black played in those early Sun records.

That is funny because on American Pickers they thought they might have found a second upright bass that was possibly owned by Bill Black and they bought it. It was bought for only $1500 by Mike Wolfe. Since they were in Louisiana they got in touch with James Burton at his museum in Shreveport to see if it was real. It was old and looked similar but it was not Bill Black's.

I was outside Pyramid Guitars on Madison when I saw a skinny long bearded fellow making his way to the shop and I told my friend it was Billy Gibbons- He didn't believe me, so I shouted out and sure enough he turned around a started walking toward us-

We started talking and he said he picking up a guitar that he had commissioned Pyramid to make for him and it was made out of wood from the house Muddy Waters grew up in-

Wish I had stuck around to see the guitar but we were headed to Horseshoe to get in an afternoon ski.

How did James help them determine it wasn't Black's? So is it possible that Paul does own the original? James Burton is a cool guy. He is a friend of a friend.

RE: All-Time Favorite Memphis Bands
There were several things about the bass that were not right. The white edge banding was not right, the head stock wasn't right, the tuning keys were not the right brand or quality. James Burton said it was a much lesser quality bass that was made to look like a Bill Black bass. But he also said it was old and was worth about what they paid for it, $1500.

Billy Gibbons lived in Memphis for a bit. He rented what was known as the Tigrett penthouse in the 99 Tower Apts downtown. I lived in 99 Tower Apts at the time and met him on several occasions riding up the elevator in the wee hours of the morning.

RE: All-Time Favorite Memphis Bands
The movie "Meanwhile in Memphis" is coming out in about a month...it mainly focuses on the 80's & 90's era of Memphis bands. Looks super interesting for anyone around during that time:

Both collections in the millions $$$.

If I had huge chunks of spare change there are some iconic guitars that I would like to have. One is available for $75K, down from $150K several years ago.

And that one would be ? You can't stop there. What guitar or owned by who?

What an incredible idea. Wonder what kind of wood it was. Wouldn't make as much difference on an electric guitar as it would an acoustic. But what a piece of history that you could own and play.
