Possible 2014 OOC changes
Looks like NMSU is trying to get out of the @Rice game:

http://crucessports.blogspot.com/2013/12...-game.html

That would leave Rice with @Notre Dame, @A&M, @Army.

Not a good situation, and UH needs home games, so we can't go there unless Notre Dame drops us.

"Boston said a buyout of the Rice agreement would cost about $200,000, but added, "Obviously that's not the option that we're pursuing."

In an email, Rice Sports Information Director Chuck Pool wrote, "there is nothing really to say other than we are in discussions with NMSU to come up with a solution to the scheduling conflict."

Tough spot for NMSU. Hopefully they find us a decent replacement or the NCAA allows their appeal because of the extraordinary circumstances with the dissolution of WAC football. NMSU probably can't afford to just hand us $200k.

If NMSU forks over the $200k at this late in the scheduling game, Rice will end up with an FCS-level team for our only home OOC game.

Possible 2014 home schedule:
SE Louisiana
UTSA
UNT
Southern Miss
Middle Tennessee

YUCK.

Not ideal, but Rice is playing. That's all I need.

edit: As well, this was the downside of setting up the next A&M contract the way we did. Granted, we may not have had great choices for home games at this point in the game, but having 6 would have been nice.

I'm not worried about the people on this site. I'm worried that the schedule will make it harder for the AD to build on the momentum of the 2013 season and bring in greater numbers of new fans to the stadium.

The schedule wasn't going to be easy to do that with regardless of this change. But, I understand your point. Not going to be simple. Will require help from the alumni and other fans to make it happen.

Texas State or Sam Houston State aren't available? They'd bring fans to the stadium. Maybe Louisiana-Lafayette?

Texas State and ULL will want a Home-and-Home series, so Rice would still lose out on the deal. And both OOC's are filled.

Texas State's:

08/30 - Arkansas-Pine Bluff
09/13 - Navy
09/20 - at Illinois
09/27 - at Tulsa

ULL:

08/30 - Southern
09/13 - at Ole Miss
09/20 - at Boise State
10/04 - Louisiana Tech

Maybe we can delay the Notre Dame game to 2015? It would be nice to have 6 home games.

Let's see who else loses a game along the way and might need a reschedule.

Also, poking around fbschedules.com, Arkansas State only has 3 committed games for next year. If Kurt Roper winds up there...

I haven't checked every school yet, but something may come up.

RE: Possible 2014 OOC changes
Army currently has 7 home games and 5 road games in 2014. Wonder if they would be willing to flip the 2014 game to Houston and the 2015 game from Houston to West Point to help Rice get some more home/road balance. It wouldn't unbalance Army.

Of course, that would give Rice 3 road OOC games in 2015 (with 1 OOC game not scheduled), but we could ask Baylor to swap the locations of the 2015 and 2016 games to help Rice even the home/road balance again, but then that starts to unbalance Baylor.

ND still has 13 games on the schedule also. Maybe both will drop us and we can just play 10 next year.

Just to make a clean sweep of the Sunbelt home schedule (which I guess it is anyways with NMSU).

(noting that UTSA is the only school on the schedule with no history of involvement with the Sunbelt or its predecessors)

Just got this from ND. Hopefully we stay on the schedule.

AD Jack Swarbrick will hold a media briefing at 11 am EST Friday, Dec. 20th, in the Guglielmino Auditorium to discuss future Notre Dame Football schedules.

Important to remember NMSU game is sandwiched between Notre Dame and A&M. If you are going to replace them, then you need a cupcake and good for early season rotations, confidence, etc. as we historically don't get many/any easy games in September.

Ignoring ghosts of the $.05 St from years past, Lamar could be good option. Used to play them back in the day and they travel as well as any team in C-USA to Houston. Sam Houston scares me a bit as we are a better team but not a 'lay-up' game either. SH is much better than NMSU or Lamar.

As posted in another thread Mello said that they have repeatedly talked with ND and were assured that they wanted to play us in the first game. Buyout became much larger after Aug 31 of this year.

Let's not complain that losing nmsu makes our home schedule hard to market. They are a bottom 5 program in fbs and don't travel

Realize the day is late but it will be hard to do worse than nmsu.
