Anyone want to speculate on Mack Brown's replacement
Seems this could be a difficult hire. Not because there won't be plenty of folks seeking the job but because whoever they hire, has to be acceptable to the base. And the pool of acceptable candidates seems pretty slim, maybe only one: Saban, which is highly unlikely but not impossible.

I assume that every coach has some buyout in their contract, so even coaches who recently signed new deals can get out.

Bottom line, I have no idea.

Anything less than a home run hire will put their fanbase in meltdown mode. I just can't see them landing one of the home run names though like Saban, Tomlin, a Harbaugh or Gruden and I'm not sure they could even land a guy in the next tier like a Jimbo or Gus. My prediction is they hire someone out of the Franklin, Briles, Strong tier. My personal guess is Briles after getting shot down by the big names behind closed doors

The Texas job is a riddle wrapped in an enigma IMO. On one hand, you have all this Texas mystique that should command a Saban, Tomlin or one of the Harbaugh brothers. In reality, Texas has this very warped perception of success where they accept nothing less than the best and in the instance where you post seasons most programs would be pleased with, you're thrown under the bus a la Mack Brown.

Regardless of whoever takes the job, I hope he has the stomach to deal with the boosters and fan base following them around almost like a mobster looking for payment.

Lane Kiffin.

Just kidding, I wouldn't wish that upon any program.

Not important. The most successful coaches in Texas History were not UT grads. Royal went to Oklahoma and Brown went to Florida State.

Gundy would have to be a major option I'd think. And, Les Miles, though think he may be a bit old....

Speaking of Lane...

Quote:Former USC coach Lane Kiffin is visiting Alabama this week to evaluate the Crimson Tide's offense, a source told ESPN on Monday.

Kiffin is a guest of Alabama coach Nick Saban, the source said, and will be in Tuscaloosa "to share ideas and exchange ideas and [for] professional development," the source said.

The five big names I feel are in the mix for this iconic job are:

Sam Houston
Stephen F Austin
James Bowie
Davey Crockett
Juan Seguin

I thought of Travis. He has a strong character, but he leans way to heavy on his defenses....

Gus Malzahn wouldn't be a bad choice, if they could pry him away from Auburn. He should be due for a big raise, and I've got a feeling he's going to lead Auburn to another BCS Championship. From the way Auburn's season ended, it seems to me like the SEC is about to get number 8. I pity FSU.

Petrino would be a perfect fit; shame that cause of his past he wont be taken into serious considerations

Malzahn got a 6 year contract extension and a raise to almost 4$ million per year earlier this month.

Chip Brown (whether you like him or not, heshould know) said on Brando this morning that the current top 3 are Fisher, Malzahn and the guy at Stanford. Said the Vandy coach doesn't "have enough skins" yet, and said more will be added, as the list is still being compiled.

Fisher and Malzahn aren't candidates unless UT is willing to wait until after the title game. If it's the day after the title game and the Horns still don't have a coach, then it's going to look like UT was waiting on them.

So what's the penalty for looking like that? Brando mentioned that, and thought Texas is one of the few schools who could afford to wait, w/o hurting recruiting.
