Arkansas State loses coach for third straight year....
If an AD got an award for making the best hires, ASU's would be a winner hands down. Hugh Freeze wins ten games and a SBC title and goes to Ole Piss after one year. Gus Malzahn replaces Freeze, wins ten games, a SBC title and goes to Auburn to play for a National Title. Bryan Harsin replaces Malzahn, wins a SBC title(shared) and is hired by Boise State after a 7-5 record. Played at Boise and coached there for ten years.

ASU got smart after Malzahn left though. Harsin's contract included a $1.75 Million buyout that has to be paid to ASU in ten days by Boise. With that cash in the bank, look for them to make another great hire. I just hope for the players, this coach makes it past a year.

Harsin is just plain bad luck, I'm not sure he was getting hired away by anyone other Boise.

Most of their fans don't seem too torn up about it. Harsin underachieved early in the year, and now they get a huge pay day to go and get an even better coach (theoretically), or at least have larger budget for their coaching staff in general. Not too bad a deal.

Does Malzahn protege Rhett Lashlee get a hard look? He's only 30 but was OC/QB coach at stAte before going to Auburn.

Sounds like USM needs their AD as he can obviously make a good coaching hire.

True story ... after Todd Graham left (or maybe it was Hatfield the year before), we had supporters of an up-and-coming coach literally promoting him on our message board. For whatever reason, Rice decided not to hire him.

Jim Harbaugh seems to have landed on his feet, however.

He is the fans choice. He'll certainly get a look, though the story is that we have a lot of interest this year from OC's at major programs. We can now pay a million dollars or more in salary, and our previous coaches are averaging over 2.5 million dollars per year in Salary at their new schools.

If Lashlee could get the right staff together, I think that is who our administration would want to hire at least. His concern will be a lack of coaching experience.

Why wouldn't you take it if you were a OC? Go there win 7-10 games go to a bigger and better program for more money. If Ark. St. could get out of the Sun Belt maybe they could retains coach more than a year.

This is going to prove to be an anomaly. In all three cases the coaches were taken by schools they had deep and/or recent ties to and Harsin's case is especiallyunique as no other program was beating the door down in Jonesboro for a coach who had just won seven games in the Sun Belt, I would not expect this trend to continue, especially if it's 7 or 8 wins.

Apparently, Harsin took their early season Memphis loss, learned from it and made adjustments/corrections while Fuente on the other hand......oh nevermind.

I'm not sure if I'd give the award for best hires here. Part of hiring a coach is getting someone who will stick around for a bit

I think the better question is when does someone poach their AD? That's the guy I would want--clearly has an eye for coaching talent.

He only hired Harsin. Dean Lee hired Freeze and Malzahn.

All I know is what Malzahn is doing with that offense is better than what Chip Kelly was doing with his at Oregon. It's virtually unstoppable, but I think a lot of that might have to do with how good Auburn's OL is but still. That offense is gashing some of the better defenses in the nation.

I know he hasn't been around long to cultivate understudies, but if you can land a disciple of Malzahn that would probably make a lot of sense.

Yeah, Drew. Fuente is settin' Tiger Lane on fire. Tiger offense finished 115th out of 123. As someone posted earlier.....UConn is lovin' this, and Temple too!
