Home internet service question
AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet Elite - D - 6.0 Mbps is now available where I live. There is nothing else but dial-up or satellite available, and I won't have either. Is that speed adequate for watching sports or movies. Please don't confuse me with technical jargon. I don't understand it. I need it in the most simple English you can put it. It's $35 a month and goes to $46 a month after one year. However, the cost part is not that important. I just need to know if it will serve my needs, especially considering there is really nothing else available. Thanks!

RE: Home internet service question
I have Comcast where I live(b/c I have to) and my parents have AT&T. I have yet to notice a difference. I watch Netflix, HBOGO, etc. at both places and never have a problem.

RE: Home internet service question
Do they put a data limit on it or restrict the speed after you use a certain amount of data?

I've got Internet Max - 12 Mpbs ($40 then $51 after 24 months). It has been fine for Netflix and Apple TV/ESPN Watch. I'm not aware of any restrictions on usage.

That will be fine.
For services like netflix, it adapts to your internet connection. It will handle a single netflix HD stream, or probably two DVD quality streams.

OMG, just curious if you're in Fayette County. They are just now installing UVerse in my neighborhood.

RE: Home internet service question
A 6Mbps connection is fine for most folks. If you try to watch more than one high def stream at once, it will more than likely buffer and sputter because they usually take about 4Mbps per stream. Therefore, if you are trying to watch 2 streams (which requires 8Mbps) on a 6Mbps connections it won't be able to keep up. In other words you will be fine unless you have multiple people on your connection watching HD video at the same time.
Also there are monthly data caps. Traditional DSL has a 150GB cap and Uverse internet has a 250GB cap. You would have to watch hours of video per day over your connection to get to that cap though.

Thanks. I have another question. I have poor cellphone signal reception at home. Will that in any way affect my download speed on my phone? Logic says it wouldn't, but all this stuff is really confusing to an old man.

RE: Home internet service question
Your cellphone can connect to the internet in 2 ways.
1. Through the internet signal coming from the cell tower. This would be affected by the cell phone reception. The better the signal, the better of faster your internet on your phone will be (generally speaking).
2. Through your home internet connection via wifi through a wireless router (which should come with the AT&T internet package). Your cell phone reception has no effect on this. Your phone is using your home internet connection to access the internet just like your home computer would. Of course you have to be at home to do it this way.

Point #2: We use home wifi with Uverse on my iPhone, my iPad, my work laptop, the kid's computer, this iMac, the wireless HP printer, my son's and daughter's smart phones, my son's iPod, all of my kid's friends phones....you get the picture. I am a big fan of Uverse, and I had DISH and DirecTV the 6 years prior to this. Whole house wifi is awesome....

RE: Home internet service question
Sounds good, but the UVerse TV is not available, only the 6mbps internet is available. I'll still need DirecTV. I think I can hook up the UVerse to get some internet features on DirecTV. I'm just not sure what they are.

Grizz, if you get Netflix...there is a option in your settings where you can lower the picture quality (to save bandwidth if necessary...I dunno if AT&T has a data cap for the month or not...I have Time Warner Cable here in Madisonville,KY..and the 20 mg a month package.)

You should be fine at 6 Mbps. You would be able to stream video but maybe not at 1080p resolution. The cap on data is 150 GB per month. You would be hard pressed to download that much data unless you are downloading lots of large computer programs, videos or streaming full resolution (1080p) video for a few hours per day every day.
