Great post gobaseline. It illustrates what I tell people all the time; 90% of people who were Democrats in the 50's, 60's and even 70's would be appalled at what is happening in America right now, and would immediately disavow any allegiance to the Democratic party. The concept of individual rights (a concept that served as a cornerstone for American principal) has been lost in favor of socialistic beliefs, which Americans, even "Republicans/Conservatives", have been indoctrinated with over the past 35-40 years.
Not to put words in your mouth or misconstrue your true sentiment but I feel the sense of "socialistic beliefs" you reference is more borne out of many in the middle class who feel they dont have control or as much influence over their view of the "American Dream".
The downturn of manufacturing jobs, the market gyrations that dissolve much of what many had set aside for retirement and the more recent housing bubble have many looking to the Fed for help.
Many feel/realize that it isnt a level playing field and just as many dont have the ability, means or desire to take the steps to keep up. One of the downsides to the speed of technology.
Now many are finding that "big government" is just as sleazy, selfish and corrupt as "big business".
What I find both a little humorus but even more disconcerting is that too many put the blame on the institutions. The common denominator is humans. Bad people make for bad decisions making bad policy. Be it small institution or big.
The issue is a moral one and it doesnt take much to find a ton of examples proving that point.
I think a good read, IMO, is a writing by C.S Lewis.
Mere Christianity. I think he does a good job of getting at and explaining the root cause.
