UAB vs New Mexico. Is this the most heartbreaking loss in our basketball history?
I was not able to watch or listen to the game yesterday. However, I just finished watching the game replay on Watch ESPN on the computer. I can't believe how we finished the game. Blowing a 5 point lead under 15 seconds in regulation, while making 4 consecutive free throws in those same 15 seconds is unbelievable. I was stunned with the ending.
This tops the Memphis home loss a number of years ago.

I hope we can rebound today against Nebraska. We must have a baseball like mindset. I'm glad we don't have to wait a week to play again. I expect every UAB player will give great effort today. Our coaches can't let something like yesterday ever happen again.

No there have been other games with more on the line throughout the years that we should have won.

The Memphis game where we were up 7 with about 1:30 on the clock when they were #1 and 26-0 (I think?) was pretty damn heart breaking. That game was likely the difference between us getting in the NCAA tournament that year, so it had huge ramifications.

Memphis was a much more heartbreaking loss in 2008. They were #1 in the nation, and we led by more than 5 with under a minute to go.

The worse loss though was against Memphis in 1985 in the NCAA tournament. We lost in OT to Coach Bartow's old team on a bad call. Bartow said it was the worse loss of his career.

I doubt I would rank yesterday in the top 10 heartbreaking losses. For one, encouragement about this team overcomes any heartbreak.

This is the big picture that everybody is not talking about right now. We weren't supposed to win that game. We weren't really supposed to be competitive. We came out and turned the ball over about 50 times in the first ten minutes. Then, everything finally started clicking. There is a lot of talent on this team. If we can just take care of the ball, we should be able to compete with most teams in the country. Although the loss stings, the team looked very good, and the future looks promising. I thought we had an outside chance of making the NCAA tournament before the season started, and now I'm rethinking that. Haase has done a tremendous job in a short period of time.

To me, the most heartbreaking loss in UAB Basketball history was to Louisville, 7 points shy of the Final Four. It still hurts to think about it.

That's my #1, too. The New Mexico game's on my top 10 list.

Nick van Exel picking up a loose ball at half court and flinging it in at the buzzer has to be one of the top ones. That one hurt big.

I was thinking the same thing! That loss was like a kick in the gut.03-banghead

Yep, I would say any game that caused the students to want to fight the opposing team would classify as heartbreaking.

That Memphis game stung for days afterwards.

I've mostly gotten over the game yesterday already.

The difference between the two is, despite my hatred for moral victories, there were so more positives to take out of that loss vs. the loss to Memphis.

The loss to Memphis was just a pure, unadulterated, Mike Davis choking act at it's finest.

It was agonizing. Very hard to get over. I don't know that I've ever been as screaming mad frustrated as I was over this one.

Proud of the team, but tired of moral victories.

Ok, I've got it. I was most heartbroken at the 1/7/2012 loss vs Memphis. We lost by three and I was sad the entire game, welling up a few times during the course of the game.

It was the first game after Coach Bartow died.

We really haven't had many moral victories or even victories in basketball in the last couple of years.

Pulling for you guys. That game was pretty brutal because it appeared that you had it won several times. It will be weird not playing you guys this year. Looks like you can win CUSA this year though.

Fourth game of the season on a neutral court....most disappointing..really? MB is right, Memphis lost in tourney in 85. Ponder fouled but no call, Mincy threw ball away late too. Really any loss in a tournament. Even regular season...How about John Stroud turnaround with 7 seconds to lift Ole Miss over us at civic center. I could name many, many more. Hell anytime we lost to Auburn hurt a lot more. Look it hurt, and yes we could have won but chill out. We actually wont know the true importance of this loss until the end of the season.

Great point. I think we will be much better than last season and will play in one of the post-season tournaments. Which one is yet to be determined. NCAA is probably a long-shot due to our schedule but this team should be very dangerous come C-USA tournament time.

I feel much better about the performance today but they have to build on it starting against Nebraska.

I changed my seat in the arena 10 times. It was extremely nerve racking. I ended up watching the 2nd OT with Coach's wife and one of their kids who didn't want to sit still in a breezeway. That woman is super competitive btw. Needless to say, neither of us took it well.

That was the most heartbreaking game period. Most of you are too young to remember this but the Elite 8 loss to Louisville in 82 was very tough because we were so close to making it the Final 4.
