App is the only true rival we have in the SBC, App is the only school within 5 hours of Huntington. App is one of only two SBC football programs that most Marshall fans have a history with.

I get it that you guys are only looking through SBC glasses, but the only thing the SBC has that's an improvement over CUSA is App football and ESPN.

I actually think most are looking at Marshall historically as a football first school and a small rural area like many in the SBC, who are also football first, and that being why Marshall is a good fit.

However I could honestly not care less anymore if Marshall got the invite. I want Southern Miss in the SBC more than anything. If Marshall, JMU, Missouri State, WKU, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, ETSU for example are the 2nd I'm cool with it.

I'm an East Tennessean at heart (the region, not the school) so I would love for ETSU to make the jump, however, I think that there is a fairly clear line of demarcation between JMU and other FCS calls up, with JMU having over twice the budget of ETSU, and about double that of Missouri St.

If it is USM plus one, I'm wondering if it would be a more western school and then send USA to the east, but budget wise, JMU, ODU or FAU might be the better options.

Athletically speaking (with budget as a consideration), UNT back to the Sun Belt makes some sense, as does WKU.

(I recognize that I am not a normal Sun Belt forum poster and just along for the ride in terms of conference realignment stuff. I don't mean to disparage any school, and I don't know what kind of relationships the Sun Belt has with especially UNT after they left.)

Welcome aboard! Leave all the disparaging of former belt scabs to the professionals 03-lmfao

All sarcasm aside, hasn't ETSU only had the football program up a running for like 3-4 years now? (I know they've built a new stadium and from a few games I've watched looks quaint). I dunno if they're ready for an FBS jump though

I moved away right about the time they were getting up and going. I would guess the stadium is nice but on the small side. They do seem to be getting decent coaches, etc. There was a recent article on ESPN (?) about a player there who got an 8th year of eligibility. I would think their current situation is a good one for them.

When I look at Tennessee's population situation compared to Louisiana, you'd think they would be able to support at least one other FBS school in terms of fan support, but not sure the local recruiting base is there. The numbers: Louisiana 4.6 mil (LSU, UL, ULM, LaTech, Tulane), Tennessee 6.8 mil and quickly growing (UT, Vandy, MUTS, Memphis). East Tennessee appears to be the better football program this year, but looking at things objectively from down here in Louisiana, UT Chattanooga seems to have more growth potential and closer/easier access to fertile recruiting areas.
On a total sidebar, the fact NDSU is not being talked about moving up surprises me. There is nothing left for them to do in FCS, hasn't been for some time, and they would fit in perfect in the MWC. There is no reason they and JMU shouldn't be FBS programs within the next 5 years.

They're not being talked about because the MWC, the probable best fit for them, didn't get raided so they don't have to backfill. There's no reason to go past 12 unless the teams added can increase the current per team payout from the MWC media deal. NDSU and any potential call up partner from another tiny population flyover state like South Dakota State or Montana don't bring the value at the moment. The ever popular MWC raiding Texas is also an option but same thing as NDSU, the target schools would have to bring the value to make it worth while since the MWC is currently not being raided.

The value in the Texas schools is the central time zone more so then the school itself. To get east coast exposure, you got to be able to get those 11am central kicks, get in the tv early and often. Right now the MW plays games after all the other games have started, tv’s are already tuned to a game, not searching for a game to watch.

Getting into a more populated eastward time zone is important. But it still has to make financial sense. If the value of the individual prospective Texas schools and any gain from the new time zone don't level out to increase money, it won't happen. 2 out of 14 schools being in the central time zone would be the minority though so there's no guarantee that shifts games to a more favorable time slot. The TV partners could just as easily keep it the same and now these 2 Texas schools are playing in the dead hours.

As the geographers say.

They are a long damn away from anyone.

UTEP is 551 miles from UTSA

NDSU is 595 miles from NIU, 802 from Tulsa, (723 from Wichita State), 805 from Wyoming, 982 from Arkansas State, and 1040 from UNT.

Unless the TV folks start telling conferences it’s worthwhile to add that travel, it’s not going to happen.

We have the App State rivalry, a short rivalry / history with GaSouthern and some history with Troy. We have a ton of WVn's living in and around Myrtle Beach, and quite a few are business owners that are MU donors. And if SoMiss joins, we obviously have a rivalry with them. So that is 5 schools right off the bat.

We've played Georgia Southern and Troy more times than we've played Charlotte, LaTech, UNT, UTEP and UTSA.
We've played App State 24 times which is more than anyone we've played in CUSA (current and past except for Louisville - 29 times)
We've played SoMiss 14 times which is the most of all CUSA teams current and past except for Louisville - 29 times and ECU - 15 times.

The MW conference isn’t backfilling or expanding with FCS call ups. So, no NDSU nor SDSU will be heading to the MW.

Problem is most of Tennessee’s population lives in 4 major metro areas. ETSU is not in any of those areas. They might as well be in Virginia given their location
The CUSA doesn't have an exit fee correct? Does the Belt? The AAC can easily waive the entry fee if they want considering they'll get a lot of money from teams leaving.

Because there are about 79.34 people in the Fargo DMA. It’s almost impossible to get to, and their other sports suck.

CUSA teams just forfeit league disbursements from the time they announce departure until departure date

SBC has an exit fee that is believed to be around 2 million plus no league disbursements the last year

But if not now, when? Is NDSU really going to be FCS in 2050?

Realignment happens every year in D1, but it's only every 8 to 10 years in FBS. This is one of those windows for them. I just don't comprehend them saying, "Yes, in 10 years or 20 years, we still want to be playing Youngstown State and Southern Illinois and competing for our 14th FCS title."

They have a lot to offer a MW or a MAC, both matter how remote they are.

Oh I know, but that's under the assumption they keep winning...granted they've been doing that ever since the bulk of the FCS powerhouses moved up but if they fall off then what? They end up another Idaho. I'd think their pedigree would help them but still any conference other than the Big 12 (unlikely although they've proven they can hold their own against both Big 12 and MW members) would be a geographical long haul without a travel partner, or if they went Football only.

I'd love to see it but I just think they might be content with being a big fish and a small pond. The FCS Championship goes through Fargo 90% of the time, they might not want to give that up. I remember us having similar arguments when App announced a FBS feasibility study. With us that worked out on our favor but those teams in the MVC and Big Sky are kind of their own thing with the small, rural towns in Western States. (I also really enjoy watching both conferences play, there's good stuff in them)
Pathetic showing from Louisiana Tech. Glad we’re not considering inviting them to the Sun Belt.

And had the BOT supported UAB Football and allowed it to be invested in we would be in the AAC right now. In essence, having a ill ran football program inadvertently stunted the growth of UAB Basketball.

I'm one of those UAB posters that is actually appreciative of CUSA because they could have kicked UAB out of the conference after the football program was shutdown and who in the hell knows where the program would be right now. So I'm not going to ever talked bad about the conference even though Judy Mac has ran it into the ground.
